OK I must add the word "croissant." Though not an expression, more of a pronunciation issue. I shudder a bit each time I hear a Brit say "cwasson".

I don't care if it's a more accurate way to say it, it just sounds snooty and horrible. It's not as though we pronounce every integrated foreign word correctly, as I've heard plenty of Brits mangle common Spanish words. NO MORE CWASSONS
In 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important.

I learned the pronunciation cwa-son in America. It doesn't sound snooty to me. It sounds correct.

I never heard anyone say cruh-sant until McDonald's started making cruh-sandwiches.  :P

I have to say, the pronunciation of paella here really gets to me.  PYE-ELL-UH.  Oh it drives me batty.  You don't say TORE-TILL-UH, why would you say PYE-ELL-UH?!?!  :P

I think I can't bring myself to go to another Spanish restaurant until I learn to let it go!  :)

I'm the opposite! My BF asked me one day if I wanted a "cross on", and I had no idea what he was trying to say until I walked into the kitchen and saw the croissants. I grew up speaking French, though, so I care about its pronunciation more than I would other languages (where I'd still care, but probably not know the difference!).

Sounds normal to me too. Sorry!

Cru-SAHNT in the American style makes me cringe.

But foreign words get mangled all the time and the British pronunciation of paella bothers me too, NoseOverTail.

I try to let go and not get too annoyed, but it's hard!  :-\\\\

What annoys me is when I pronounce something correctly, and the other person corrects me, and their pronunciation is wrong.

Like when I pronounce bruschetta as broos-ket-ta (In Italian, the h after the c makes it a hard K sound), and they say "You mean broo-shet-ta."

That's correct, though, isn't it? If the spelling is 'fillet' then it's pronounced fill-it. If it's spelled 'filet' then it's 'fil-ay'. I could be wrong, but I thought 'fillet' was an English word, based on the French word 'filet.'

That was my take on it too. Although at first it sounded "wrong".

Yes this is enitrely correct.

It must be exhuasting to be "annoyed" by such silly things as the pronunciation of a breakfast pastry and a cut of meat.

Well we wouldn't have an entire thread based around this if people were always content.  Let's all just remember, different strokes for different folks  :)
