My SIL always signs with an X but it doesn't annoy me.

I remember once when I was in Sheffield at a sandwich shop I asked the guy behind the counter if he was from the States and I just barely escaped the lasers he shot out of his eyes at me. Geez, it's not like I accused him of being a paedophile or something. I wouldn't get upset if people thought I was from Canada.

I get asked if I'm Irish and hardly ever if I'm American or Canadien. Though, I remember there were two women at a restaurant who told me they had a bet going on if I was American or Irish.

What I find annoying is the over usage of the kiss symbol 'x'. It seems to have lost its significance, since people will use it for everyone and anyone. For me, the 'x' is reserved for only a select few- a close-knit few, though I prefer to use the heart.

My bf and his friends do this a LOT haha. It also craks me up when he calls some people a muppet. Muppets here in the US are usually the Jim Henson kind haha ;) :D   ;D

I do find it funny to hear Tim Roth (as Cal Lightman) calling people muppets from time to time on 'Lie To Me'. I love how the show doesn't portray him as yet another British person who gave up all British slang to become completely Americanized. It seems like all other shows do that, which isn't true to life.

I think that's a kind of comparison thing... because they are saying the people are silly and childish, like a character from The Muppet Show which was very popular with kids here.

I have noticed this on my fiance's facebook, all the Brits using X after everything. I can honestly say before my fiance I never used an x after stuff - it's how we sign our emails, xxxx - and I remember the first time I saw it on his sister's facebook.

Must be a British thing...

I like to remain the black sheep over here and not use it. :P
But, I still use hearts for those worthy of it. :P

That's odd because my parents' generation (US) surely used xx for kisses.

I think x is used in the US to mean kiss, but only for special people.  We x all over the place here!  I've been here so long, it seems normal now.  [smiley=laugh3.gif]

Although I'm not sure if there's a different protocol for guys, because they were giving a guy in the office stick for having sent the female boss a text about something work related with an 'x' at the end (the gals would normally do that) & he was blushing and saying he didn't do it, and so forth.

I guess I must have converted to British because I'm always typing "x" and I'm happy to get them whether it's friendly or x-rated.  I can always tell the difference between the two kinds of kisses on paper just like I can in real life.  :D

I have seen xoxo used here, but everyone I have ever admit, has never ended EVERY facebook post with an x.

The "Mistaken for Canadian" and patriotic discussion has been split to it's own topic here:

An expression I just don't get is 'then you've had it'. I have recently heard it used as 'Today will be fine, but it is going to rain the rest of the week and then you've had it.' It makes it sound as if there is impending doom in the future because of a little rain, or whatever small thing is being mentioned.
