OK Leeds area people please help me with suggestions!

My hubby says next weekendwe will get away somewhere. I want quaint and picturesque but hopefully not expensive.  It could be camping if B&Bs turn out to be too expensive.

How far are you wanting to go?

If you want close in, I'd suggest Burnsall (Yorkshire Dales), the North Yorkshire coast, Swaledale is lovely this time of year (Reeth), Dentdale is fab.

Or you could go somewhere in the Lake District or maybe the Peak District?  Tell me how far afield & what kind of things you'd want to do & I'll try to help.  :)

Well I'd say up to an hour and a half's drive away.  We'd probably go for a hike during the day.  My main interest is picturesque-ness countryside.  I like coast, but Mike likes less flat and more hills and trees so I guess we won't go coastal.

If you do go somewhere 'quaint', try not to say 'it's so quaint!' out loud while you're there.  Dunno about your part of the world, but up here, it's considered a bit of an insult... it means something that's kind of odd or backward.  Kind of like the way some people use the word 'special'.

I mean "quaint" in a way that means beautiful, post-card-y, old village-y.  Yes, a tourist  or city-based person like me might use the term, but I wouldn't use it in any way that means anything odd, backward, or negative--I'm not like that.  I'm more than a bit "quaint" and "special" myself.  :)

Andee, if you're wanting hiking & picturesque-ness countryside (plus hills & trees etc) - you can't go wrong with most of the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District, I'd say.

Some of our favourite places in the Dales (purely subjective!) and in no particular order:  Burnsall, Reeth, Aysgarth Falls, Sedburgh (the Howgills - can be pretty remote!), Dent.

Some Lake District favourites (though we still have much to explore up there!): Dungeon Ghyll, Langdale area, Borrowdale, Keswick, Bassenthwaite, and you can't go wrong with the area around Ambleside of course (but it's a very busy, touristy spot!).

Also - you know the North Yorkshire Coast area isn't exactly flat - lol!  What with all those cliffs!  :)

You might not want to overlook the North York Moors area either - for this time of year, it's often even more spectacular than usual - with the heather in bloom.  :)

Come see me! lol, not what you are looking for as far as scenery but I like it :)

My suggestions, though not sure how far away they are from you, would be going to bakewell/cressbrook/monsal head in the peak district or robin hood's bay. everyone goes on about how much they love it there! I love the peak district, used to visit there a lot, good for hiking and outdoors, beautiful scenery, quiet, holds a lovely place in my heart :)

Burnsall is gorgeous!!! I noted (for future reference) that there's a B&B or two and some self-catering cottages. :)

Plus you can walk there from Ilkley!  (only 13 miles of easy riverside walking!)  ;D

And there's a tea room there that is dead cheap for good, basic eating.  :)

Is that the Dales Way? If so, I think you can walk there from my house. ;D

Yes, Ilkley marks the official start of the Dales Way trail...there's a Leeds extension that is probably what goes by your house.  Of course, that would add a few more miles onto that 13 I mentioned (from Ilkley to Burnsall).  :)

Just a few...and not very pretty ones either, I imagine. :P

How about Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay or even my favourite Whitby, nearby is Goathland where they film heartbeat, with the north yorkshire steam railway at Pickering within a few miles. http://www.nymr.co.uk/
its a far better thing i do than i have ever done

I was going to suggest Whitby!  Coast, hills, very picturesque!
