Wow...so much going on today!

Zoya, welcome...that is a great story and similar to mine in that I wasn't looking to meet anyone...went on a business trip to the UK 2 1/2 years ago and the rest is history! :)

Beth, That's so great that you are enjoying the free time that you have and doing something new everyday...I like that idea!

Sarah, that's nice about the weight loss...I can imagine that happening as you are probably walking around a lot more too.  I am looking forward to having more time to spend in the gym when I am there.

EQ, that's a really good idea about the post its...may have to give that a try.  Last weekend I sold a bunch of my daughters stuff to a second hand store and then dropped some off at Goodwill.  Still more to do though.

Hi JEP and anyone else I missed.  Hope everyone has a great day!

Equest- When are you thinking of moving?

My pets will be eligible to go in December, assuming they pass their blood test that's getting done on Friday.  (They should, they're already on a 3yr vaccine from Nov 08, and they got new 1yr vaccines 2 weeks ago, too.)

I was originally hoping I could move in Dec/Jan, since I could sell my house, sell the rest of my belongings, and come up with my baseline savings that I want before I move (~$30,000, eep).  However, selling the house is not looking likely, so that might push me back a bit. :(  I'm hoping to still get $20,000 from selling my horse-related stuff, and possibly another $5,000 from selling the rest of my belongings (car, furniture, etc), but that leaves $5,000+ to make up myself.

So..it depends on when that happens.  Those assumptions are also based on my moving over without any job prospects and assuming I'll have expenses related to a £30,000/yr salary.  If I were lucky enough to have interviews lined up for salaries higher than £30,000, or even a job offer (unlikely, but would be awesome), or if the market picks up enough that I could put selling my house back on the table, I might be able to move sooner.

At the moment, I'm optimistically shooting for Jan-Mar move time, probably.  I'm still debating whether I also want to factor in a couple of months living with my parents (cheap) so that I can hopefully get some online business projects up and running (which, if they do well, would allow me more flexibility once I move).

So...we'll see.  I'm sick of NC, so I'd rather move sooner, but there are a lot of loose ends to tie up first, unfortunately.  (Not the least of which is getting official citizenship and a passport, which will probably take until Oct/Nov as it is.)

Thanks, I stole it from a meeting we have regularly at work...blue are "significant events", red is "what could be improved", and green is "what went well".  The meeting is usually pretty boring, but at least the idea is cool! ;)

How do you find second-hand stores to sell your stuff to?  I would be interested in selling books that way...right now I'm selling them one-by-one online, but that's not very efficient (though I have made $40 so far, woo!).

EQ, I happened to come across and advert for a 2nd hand store for baby/children items, while I was looking in the local neighborhood news letter.  As far as books, in TX, we have a couple discount book stores that buy back old books...the names escape me now.  HTH.

I can relate to your feelings on selling on line and the time it takes...people suggest that I use it, but honestly I don't know when I would have the time to do that.  To me, time is more valuable than money at the moment!

Glad to see updates from everyone and that you all seem to be doing well!

I am so very jealous of those of you spending summers in the UK.  I feel like I am missing out on so much!   But, my update is that David is really getting into the document collecting and has requested all the bank statements, mortgage statements and proof of employment and I should have them next week (or maybe the next knowing my husband), but either way should be fine.  I am aiming to apply for my visa first week of July and.... drum roll please.... moving day should be August 11.
Or maybe July 31... tell me what you think here - David is going to the Big Chill Festival which is the 7-9th of August, so I was thinking that since he will be gone all that weekend I just would hold of since I think he'd be feeling like he needs to check up on me all the time while he is supposed to be enjoying this festival. He is saying that that isnt necessary to wait, but what do you guys think?  Would it be a bad start to be all by myself for my first weekend in the UK?  Or would it be a great time to check things out?

Carey,
It depends on your personality.  For me, as long as I had a few days with my bf when I first got here- I'd be fine with him gone for a weekend.  But, I'm super independent and I like my alone time, especially when I'm getting settled.  Plus, sometimes boys get in the way of unpacking.  ;)  To each their own though.

ditto what Sarah said...I would be fine, but it really just depends on your personality.  I probably would enjoy DF being gone, so I could organize! :D

Oh I know I would be fine and would probably enjoy the time alone to kind of take it all in and rest up after all this stress, but I am concerned that he will feel like he needs to check in on me and I dont want him to be thinking about that while he is away.  I guess it may come down to airline ticket prices. I'm going to ask that my visa is dated for August 1 and then go from there!

Yay, that's super awesome, Carey!  If you can manage to convince David that you're really looking forward to having a few days to just putter around, unpack, unwind, sleep/get over jet-lag, etc, I would think it would be fine.

Good luck with the move!  I can't quite picture being ready to move that soon, but you've been planning things far longer than I have. ;)

It's so hard being here, when I just want to be there for him right now. He told me he's been trying to keep busy and not think about his Gran, but it's hard :(.  I broke down to him today because I felt utterly useless over here.  Gah. Being a mature adult and not hopping the first plane over is hard!

OTOH....34 days til he's here!

welcome zoya!

sarah: yes, sorry we weren't able to meet up while i was there :(  we'll definitely have to squeeze it in in the week between my arrival and your departure in august though!

my UK trip went way too quickly and i ended up sick for most of it.  i did manage to get the flat set up and it really felt like home by the time i left.  we still need to pick up a few small pieces of furniture and figure out some extra storage options for when i bring the REST of my stuff over in a few months, but i'm really pleased with the place!!

hope everyone has a fun weekend lined up.  between jet lag and staying out really late at the red sox/yankees game last night at fenway park, i'm utterly exhausted right now and can't wait to crash tonight.
