Christmas Package
« on: November 16, 2008, 01:57:09 PM »
I'm looking for some help here.  My sister-in-law is American and has been living here in the UK for about 8 years now.  I thought for Christmas I'd like to put together a hamper of American goodies.  I was thinking food mainly but ideas for other bits and pieces would be welcome.

What I want to know is what would people suggest and where do I get these items?  I leave in rural North Yorkshire so guess that internet shopping is going to be one option.  Otherwise Ripon, Northallerton and Harrogate are not too far away.

Any ideas??

Amazon.com can be a good place to get items, however I doubt you'd get them before Christmas ordering now unless you paid a stupid amount in shipping.   :-\\\\  The US site sells certain food items and you could alway see if she has an Amazon wish list too.   ;)  Otherwise, food items wise there's Skyco, Cybercandy and various other American food import shops too.

Where in the states is your SIL from?  Maybe try and find something regional for her?  Like I'm from Cleveland, OH - you could get me the movie A Christmas Story (as no one over here would really know about it and it was written & filmed in Cleveland).   Or the lamp from said movie.   ;)

Good luck!

Sadly, I've been unable to find A Christmas Story available for sale in PAL format.  :\\\'(

It may sound like a funny thing, but if your sister-in-law is in to cooking, I was tickled pink to find out this week that they sell canned pumpkin at Waitrose.  I used to go clear across town to a local dept. store that sold it and make things like pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread then they stopped selling it.  When I found out they have it at Waitrose, I bought out their stock!

Root beer is another thing if she likes soda.  ASDA sells some, but you can find stuff like A&W online that is much better.

Another idea is to make her a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies or look around for a brownie mix.

If you search online you'll find most DVD players here have codes that can open them up to other formats.  It won't be listed in the manual that comes with the player, but it's usually fairly easy to set it to an international setting that lets you use many regions.  We had a Christmas gathering last year and watched my American copy of A Christmas Story with all DH's British friends.  They got a kick out of it!

We don't have a videotape player any more.  I'll mention the DVD code thingie to Steve, but it might be easier to just find it online somewhere...  ;) :)

I thought we would have to 're-program' our dvd player to play movies I brought from the states but I popped one in and HOORAY! it played just fine, no adjustment required.
Which movie was it?  [smiley=blush.gif]  A Christmas one, "The Lemon Drop Kid", 1950's, Bob Hope, with the song "Silver Bells".  I know, I'm starting the holiday movies a little early but I couldn't help myself.

Am I the only one who thinks A Christmas Story is the worst movie on the planet?

Am I the only one that used to keep A Christmas Story on all day (24-hr TNT!) on Christmas?  I love that movie!

Just to answer a question - she's from Long Branch, New Jersey.  Does that mean anything to anyone?

Does she like The Sopranos?  Long Branch is the setting for some of the show!
