My very favorite great uncle passed away today.  It's like it never rains, but it f***ing pours.  My family is absolutely gutted and I feel like the worst kid ever for not being able to be home.  I can't take anymore bad news this year.   

Sorry to hear this.  My great-uncle (one of the kindest, sweetest men to ever live) passed away last year shortly after I returned from the US.  I was so sad about the death itself but felt a million times worse because I couldn't be there.  I know exactly how you are feeling and it's not nice.

I'm back in April for two weeks, so I'm not going back for the funeral.  I wish I could go back now, but it's just too expensive.

Yeah, that's a major problem. When my Grandma died I couldn't afford to go back for the funeral and besides had two little kids. My dad taped (audio) the whole service and sent it to me. I remember I just sat on the floor and cried listening to it 

Sorry for your loss Sarah. Having a death in the family is bad enough but not being able to go home is SO hard to deal with. I know as it happened to me last January.

I'm sorry you can't go back for the funeral.  I'm sure they all understand & good that you can spend the time come April - not too far off.

I wasn't able to go back for my beloved grandmother's funeral back in 2005.  My in-laws paid for us to go back for my mom's funeral in 2008 - it was so very kind of them.
