Packing and Sending Spousal App to Courier--LA
« on: April 15, 2009, 03:36:52 AM »
This seems like a really dumb question, but it's just something I'm curious about :( I have about 40 days until I get married, then I'll be sorting out my biometrics and shipping everything off to LA. I plan on using Global VIP because it seems a lot of people had good experiences with them (for the most part) and their rates seem pretty reasonable to me.

But there's a couple points I'm not entirely sure on:

1.) I'm under the impression when I send something to the courier, I'll have to use an airway bill, yeah? My fiance explained it to me, and I heard it mentioned once before here on the forums, but I wanted to double check to see if that was the right way to sort out all the payment issues in terms of shipping the package back and forth.

2.) All I need to do is print off the order form off the website and include the payment, I think? There isn't anything special I need to send with the actual application, just those two things?

3.) Do I need to let them know ahead of time that I'm sending a package down to them? I don't know if I need to call or email ahead of time, or if they know enough what to do with it with the order form included.

Again, I feel kinda dumb, and if these things are addressed somewhere else on the forums, my bad :( I haven't really read anything about these things, and they're floating around in my brain trying to cause me more anxiety than I need right now.

Don't feel dumb!

I know nothing about the couriers, as I am not using one. I am not in as big of a hurry to get my visa because I plan to stay at home for at LEAST another month to put my things into storage and sort out some other issues... But good luck!!!

Hehe, thanks :) I'm using one since I'm an impatient git, and I'll only truly relax once I have my visa in my grubby little hands :P I just don't want to *not* do something that I should of done in terms of getting it down to the courier; I've had a gander on their website but nothing has jumped out at me, so I figured I'd see if anyone who did it in practice did anything special, or has any advice  :-[

Just out of curiosity, could you send me the courier website?

That's for a courier to LA, that's their website for UK settlement visas. I think I got most of the order form filled out, and I missed the bit where they said they'd take an air bill, so I guess that question is answered :P

I find sometimes just being able to talk to someone in the same position as me helps out a lot :) And I find a lot of people on here can give some really good advice, hence why I end up asking dumb questions sometimes :P

Oh definitely! Me too. When I originally posted here, it was after looking on government websites which are just so coded with jargon that it is impossible for normal people to get any decent information! I had noooo idea what I was doing. And that was JUST after discovering that I could not get a work visa through the school that wanted me... It was SO stressful. We weren't even supposed to get married for another 2 years (since I just graduated college in December and we wanted to save up)! But we decided being apart for another long period of time was not an option. So here we are. :P Was originally going to do the Fiancee visa, but thanks to some good advice here, went an easier/less expensive route.

Speaking of good advice, I wish someone had told me this. If you are strapped for cash, book a flight to Dublin. Then book a Ryan Air flight separately. It is saving me like $200 for my one-way ticket... I don't know why it is so much cheaper.

Be careful about using Dublin as your point of entry if it is your first entry on a visa.  You will not get a stamp when you enter the UK when coming from Ireland as it is part of the common travel area.  You may want to read this: http://www.uk-yankee.com/articles/advocacy.php?itemid=80

When I came on here I had a few ideas about what I needed to do for my visa from other people I had spoken to, but this ended up being by far the best website I found for sorting my stuff out. I prolly would of made loads more mistakes if I hadn't come here, and I know my fiance is thankful as well since I've been able to turn him in the right direction of what he needed to do without him having to read :P

Thanks for finding that link, mirrajay; I was trying to find a way to describe the issue with flying into Dublin but couldn't really do it in a coherent fashion  :-[

But as long as I seek out an Immigration officer it should be alright shouldn't it?

SHOULD be, but there have been many people who have had trouble getting them to stamp them when coming from Ireland even when they specifically ask. You may end up having to do a quick channel hop to get your stamp.

What do you mean by "quick channel hop"?

I should also add that I just re-checked prices, and flights to London have gone up even more. so it's more like a saving of $400+! However, if the only way is to fly into London first, I will do it.

I think it's when people go across the channel to France and such, then come back through UK immigration and get their stamp to validate their visas.
