Rubygirl, you must be from the Cincinatti area!! I used to live there and loved Graeter's and Skyline Chilli as well! I know I will miss Chicago pizza, the little cheap authentic mexican places where you can get the best burritos, panera bread, and jimmy johns!
Does anyone know if you can get decent avacados's out there? My fiance came here and fell in love with avacado's because i used them on everything and he fell in love with guacamole, so when he went back to the UK (he is English) he said he had a heck of a time finding nice, ripened one's because the ones they sold in the stores were very hard and never ripened...
Oh, and what about the electric coffee makers that we use in the states? I know electric kettles are in every household pretty much and that alot of people drink tea and instant coffee. Is there an option to buy a typical coffee maker that you put in grinds and water and it makes it in a pot? I will miss that terribly if there is not!!!
Great discussion so far though! It's helping me get an idea of maybe a few extra special things to bring over....

Oh, and just another little question that is a bit off topic and hopefully not a stupid question! Do they sell little ziploc or sandwich sized plastic baggies there? Plastic tupperware? I often pack my lunch so these things are a necessity! Thanks!

Argos sells quite a few filter coffeemakers.  I just bought a cheap one for my sister's visit (neither DH nor I drink coffee, but I knew she wouldn't be happy with instant!) for less than £6.  Worked just fine!

All grocery stores sell Ziplocs and cheap Glad-ware type tupperware (the disposable kind) but if you're partial to actual Tupperware, bring your own - and nowhere seems to sell heavy duty freezer bag ziplocs, just the regular plastic sandwich kind.  I bring a box of gallon-sized Hefty freezer bags back with me every time I go home. :)

There are Costco's peppered around the UK, and they carry many American products like Zip Loc bags. Coffee machines, just like the ones in the states are regularly available everywhere.

All of the supermarkets do their own lines of zip loc type bags.

There are tupperware type of containers to be found at any large supermarket -- I have found a brand called "Klip and Lock" at both Sainsbury's and Morrisons, very good plastic storage containers with lock-down lids, keeps food very fresh, in all sizes, and not at all the same as the flimsy disposable Gladware type. I've also found tupperware style containers in hardware stores and pound stores -- Pyrex even do a line of glass storage bowls and containers (nice enough to also serve in) with strong rubber lids like tupperware.

You really won't have to bring your own unless you have one of those great sets -- if you do, I'd bring that as I haven't found an actual "Ta-da!!! 20 piece Tupperware set!" type of thing over here, but just to reassure you, you absolutely CAN find the same kind of individual containers in various sizes, and "for keeps" ones, not just disposable Gladish ones.

I am not living in the UK yet but since I make guacamole often, I am always buying avocados.  I haven't had too hard of a time finding them but it is just like the states, it is a hit or miss on how ripe they are and you may need to plan ahead, to give them time to ripen.  You'll be fine on that front but be careful as everyone I have ever made guac for in the UK has fallen in love as the typical guacamole in the UK isn't all that great.  Your new  British friends might be asking you to make guacamole all the time *wink*

Plain yellow-box Cheerios.

This one is going to kill me, I love the plain ole yellow-boxed cheerios.

Filter coffee machines are easily available.  I would die if I only had instant coffee...

I haven't moved yet either, but it is my understanding that pickle relish is difficult/impossible to find in the UK.  That's going to be a big challenge for me!  Plus, the Cheerios.

Yay! so happy to hear about good ol' fashioned filter coffee. I think I too would die without it.  Ya, goods, I have made guac for my fiance and his friends and it is a HUGE hit!!!! He tries to make it all the time now without me and it is just not as good as mine! I know the tortilla chips are another thing, I'm not sure if there is plane old tortilla chips, he always buys Doritos for the guac and I just don't like that as much!  This is a very helpful thread. Thank you all!

Sweet pickle relish is sold by Branston.

For me its Funions, Wise BBQ potato chips, twizzlers, seconding the good bagels, once again mentioning brined dill pickles ( :) ) and Corn Pops.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
