So....I will have 5 gigantic suitcases plus carryons when my son and I fly into London. I need to get them to Hastings, but df doesn't have a car, I don't know how we'd manage them on the train, I don't even know anyone there with a large enough automobile to transport all the bags.

Did anyone overcome a similar obstacle? I'm seriously out of ideas.

Thanks !

allie

Make that 4 gigantic suitcases and one reasonably sized one.:)

And once we get them to the flat, it's a 5th floor walk up....I'm glad I have a strong and energetic fiance....It is making me worn out to think about carrying all of those up the stairs!:P

Cn you fiance negotiate a deal with a local taxi firm to collect you for a not too unreasonable price? Most cab firms have people carriers big enough to take all your luggage.

This was going to be my suggestion...the only the suggestion I could think of is for your DF to hire a car for the day.

Is there any way you can bring less stuff with you?
I imagine you're going to incur some big 'excess baggage' charges...

If you fella doesn't drive, maybe he has a friend or family who would be willing to help collect you.

If you move slowly and thoughtfully, you would be able to make a train trip work, but it will be a major pain.

I managed to get myself here iwith 2 oversized suitcases and 3 cats on my own.  I entertained the thought of hiring a van and driving myself to my destination, but I quite like my life and want to keep it.  Thankfully my uncle collected me, drove me to my home and then proceeded to take me out shopping for all the household goods I'd need.

...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

Take the coach:  www.nationalexpress.com

That's what we did - we had six huge bags plus five carry-ons. Loaded all the bags in the coach's luggage compartment, took the coach from Heathrow to Brighton, then called around until we found a taxi company who had a "London cab" that would fit us and all of our bags. They delivered us to our door safe and sound.  :)

 Cheers for all the replys..

I think I will be following prince.je's plan. It makes me think I may even be able to get away with bringing more stuff.:P

It's so hard to pack 28 years worth of crap into a few bags. Plus my son's stuff....

I gave away/threw away more stuff than I care to think about, I can not condense it any further!

It's a good idea prince.je, but you are not guaranteed you would get all that luggage on as they do have restrictions to luggage allowance. You were lucky that day.

Put an ad up (free) explain your situation and get people to bid on it :)
Then choose the cheapest/best bid :)

MeShell is right. Those coaches only have limited space for luggage. Imagine if every passenger had 4 or 5 suitcases. They'd have to havee another coach just for that!

Call Ian.  07950 433901   ;D  He services SE England with his van.

No guarantees he's always reachable, but he's reliable and ruthlessly efficient at getting people's stuff from one place to another.  It will leave you breathless.  Tell him "garry".

From my own experience, he can also change the windows, change locks, fix the garden fence, put up wallpaper, assemble the baby crib, twice came and fixed my car  :o and even babysit!  A good guy to know.

But like I say, getting hold of him can be a epic unto itself...

Can he transport people as well though Garry? most man and van outfits I've come across can usually only fit 1 extra person in the front bit.  Sounds like a very handy person to know though!

His van seats 6 if I recall.  He takes the seats out according to mission.  It can also tow a car behind.  He did that for me also.

He takes my wife to IKEA  ;D  and puts all the sh*t she buys in the back.  But the OP is just talking about some large suitcases.  Should be a breeze...
