I Feel Like a Dum@ss!!
« on: October 27, 2009, 12:20:29 PM »
I know there have been a lot of us who have recently moved so I thought I would make a thread about "every day" type things that you are incapable of figuring out.  There are some really simple things that have been stumping me and I feel like a real dumbass for asking my British family how to do things...like drying clothes without a clothes dryer...how in the world?  My MIL leaves her clothes on a drying rack for 3 days and then irons the rest of the dampness out of them.  This is *NOT* going to work for me (even if I have to spend the money to buy a freaking dryer!)!!  You can post here if there are any strange terms, slang, etc that you don't understand but feel stupid asking what it means also.

Also post any "DUH!" revelations you've had since you got here (it might help some of us).  I just realized that the "side" is in reference to the kitchen counter...not really sure where that one came from but I don't feel so stupid now when my hubby says "Can you plug my phone into charge?  It's sitting on the side."

My worst dumb@ss moment had to be wondering what to do with a plastic kettle. It was sitting on the side (tee hee!) and not plugged in so didn't see the cord. I must have stood there for 5 minutes trying to figure out what to do and was too embarrassed to ask  ::)

That's a new one for me. Maybe it's a regional thing?  ??? My husband calls it a counter top. I'll watch for it now. One thing that did confuse me was my husband asking me to hand him the torch out of the cupboard? Huh? I was looking in the cupboard for a minute or so before he finally said I mean flash light!

Not sure if it's regional or not...but the counter is the thing you put your items on at the shop.   :)

You can also let them airdry a bit then put them in the airing cupboard, if you have one? The cupboard where the boiler is? This tends to be quite warm and dries the clothes quicker. You can also by a clothes line for your back garden and hang them up :)

My hubs calls the kitchen counters "the bench." I guess I'm used to that now, but I suppose it was strange at first.

I feel you on the laundry thing, that was the bain of my existence. I have barely ironed anything in my life, and I certainly didn't expect to be a slave to the iron when I moved here! (Hello? Doesn't anyone else "fluff" things in the dryer?  :P) We hung our clothes outside or over the radiators. On the radiator meant they were crunchy and pretty much had to be ironed in order to be wearable. I absolutely hated that and it was such a huge problem for me that hubs bought a dryer with our credit card to keep me from going insane.  :) He irons all his own stuff - which includes jeans and t-shirts. I will never understand the British obsession with ironing. But I do understand not always using the dryer to save money and the environment (we do hang our sheets and towels and things outside when we can).

Get a dehumidifier and they'll dry faster.

I didn't realize the temperatures on the washing machine were in C, not F. I would wash almost everything in cold in the US (except towels and sheets), so I ruined some of my clothes as the colors ran in the hot water.

Nor me LOL

My mum showed me a trick whereby if you tumbledry just a few shirts or blouses, then hang them up when still hot, they come out so you don't have to iron them. Ok, not military creases or anything, but enough that I only have to use my iron for quilt blocks LOL

Yep, that's what I call "fluffing!" It's my preferred method.  :P

We found a tumble dryer for just a little over 100 pounds so hubby has already said we can buy one if it's necessary.  We are renting a house with a huge backyard but it's completely empty (i.e...nothing to hang the clothes line from and because we rent we can't stick anything in the ground) so I couldn't even hang my clothes out if I wanted to.  And I don't care how much fabric softener you use or how much you iron, you just can't get that stiffness out (in comparison to something being in a dryer).  To me it's not really even that though, it's just the amount of time that is consumed.  I can't wait 2-3 days for something to dry...it's just not possible!!  I am willing to conform to a lot of "British" ways but I refuse on that one.
