OMG!   And don't light a cigarette!

Another DUH moment tonight..."mild" (in reference to weather) means warm...in the US, we used it to mean cold.  Ugh.

??? I've never heard that, mild has always meant warm as far as I knew. I think this (like, I think, many other things that come up in these sorts of threads) is a regional difference in the US as much as it is a US-UK thing.

It's gonna depend on context as well - if you use 'mild' in the middle of the summer, then it's likely to refer to cooler than normal weather, but in the winter it's probably going to mean warmer than normal weather :P.

Isn't that the same with all driers though or anything with a thermostat?

I thought it was all driers and things like kettles which were supposed to be left to switch themselves off.

I could be WAY off the mark here, so please do say if I've got it wrong.

Not sure, it specifically states in the manual for my dryer so all may not be the same.

Doesn't matter with kettles as they just have a metal rod that expands with the heat and touches a switch to turn off.....so turning off before wouldn't damage anything.

My first DUH moment (of many I'm sure) was when I was locked INSIDE the house the other day.  Hubby had given me keys for the door and locked the front one on his way to work.  Later that day I decided I wanted to walk to Tescos to get things for a nice dinner.  Went to unlock the door and couldn't get out. Issue 1) He had given me the wrong keys- luckily there was another set in the kitchen drawer.  Issue 2) Then locking the door by pulling up on the handle.  That one took me a couple tries.  I'm now ace. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

My first DUH moment (of many I'm sure) was when I was locked INSIDE the house the other day.

I got locked in 2 times in the first few weeks I was here.  My husband did the same thing.  He'd been here alone for 5 months, and got accustomed to locking the door (nothing weird there!) on the way out.  Except that we didn't have the inside keys from the landlord.

The first time, he got all the way to work before I realized it, so I was trapped most of the day.  I don't rattle easily, but of course all I could think about was "what if there's an emergency!!!"  The second time, he'd barely made it to the tube station, so I was released early for good behavior.

 :D

Probably is a regional thing...I've only heard the term used in the summer when it's cool outside.  And I've never heard it used in "normal" conversation...only weather programming.

Oh, I got locked in too! And I couldn't figure how to UNLOCK the door for the postman. All I could say is "hold on! I'll get it!"

It took me a good five minutes to figure out how to unlock it.

HAha Tim locked me in too!  Shortly after he returned from work that day, he handed me a set of keys.

Fortunately, I was able to call his mobile and he told me I could call his parents who had a spare in case I really needed out.

LOL I've been locked in too!

I got my revenge on my husband though! I leave my set of keys in the door (because I lose them if not) so when he comes home he cant stick his key in. He was locked out! The first time it happend to him he was not happy  >:(! I had been in the shower and not heard him banging down the door for 20 minutes! Of course I was LMAO at him  [smiley=laugh4.gif]. I try and watch for him now.

I know people have gas stoves in the States, but in the American South, it seems that most homes from the '50s on are completely electric - you have to ask for gas lines to be installed if you want them, and then only serious cooks seem to ask for them. So, being from Florida, I had no earthly idea how to use a gas stove when I moved to London. I turned the knob on, and no flame. I was too embarrassed to ask my flatmates for help, so I actually called one of my friends from back home, who told me that you have to push the knob in to get the little spark. He then helpfully informed me that as we were speaking that the kitchen was filling up with gas, and that I had better open a window. :o

I've had mostly gas stoves, but none of them in the States had a separate button to push to light it.  We've had pilots, old ones you needed to light with a match, and the (most common in my experience) ones you light by either pushing in or moving the knob to a certain bit.   I guess this is one of my early dumb@ss things, but I had a hard time adjusting to the button even with all the gas experience.

We are in a new house and this is the way our cooktop (range) works. Gas is very cheap here and it is getting cheaper. How often does that happen?. My bill is about $14 a month to heat the water (3.5 bathrooms and washing machine) and kitchen stove. Now come Dec through Feb it will be a different story.

Sorry for the HJ.

I've been locked in as well and to this day I'm still not sure how it happened! I went to turn the lock and it literally fell off in my hands.  :o  I had to take my son to school and  thought I would go go around the back way and the neighbour had the gate locked and was not home!  >:(  So I ended up having to call my son's school and explaining why he was going to be late while they tried not to laugh and my husband had to leave work to come let us out.  ::)
