I hate duvets
« on: November 13, 2009, 04:49:05 PM »
I've lived in Yorkshire for a year now and STILL hate duvets with a flaming passion. They're too short, they always come undone, and I just really loathe them. I want a comforter. My comforter at our apartment in the US was this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3223/2613766301_37870fe972.jpg. Please tell me that somewhere in the UK or online (but based in the UK) sells proper comforters. The one in the link that I loved is microsuede, but I won't be that picky. I just want something doesn't require me to button it into a cover. Nothing will convince me to learn to love duvets. I've tried Googling but am not coming up with anything but these wretched duvets. I don't want to have to import one if I don't have to  :-\\\\

Well, I can't help you source a comforter, but if you search a word like "quilt" you might have better luck - I don't think I've ever seen the word "comforter" used here....

Also, I ended up buying a king sized duvet for our double bed and it made a world of difference to our sleeping comfort.... And once you get the knack of putting the cover on (and there definitely is a "trick" to it - start with it inside out and the duvet spread on the bed, and stick your arms into the furthest corners - the corners that will ultimately be at the pillow end. Then with your hands in the corners, pick up the corners of the duvet and unroll the cover onto it. Hard to describe in words, but once I learned it I never struggled again). As for the buttons, you can buy them with snaps which will help take a 30 second task down to maybe 15 seconds.  ;)

A duvet basically IS a comforter, just plain instead of patterned. You can buy different thicknesses and sizes so that it's more comforter like, but in terms of materials it's essentially the same thing. Duvet covers are just to keep them from getting dirty since people in the UK don't tend to use a top sheet. If you're not bothered about it being plain white, just buy a duvet that's a bigger size than your bed to get more coverage and use a top sheet instead of a duvet cover.

That looks like a really long comforter.  I never had one that length before.  All of mine was just slightly longer than the duvets that I have here.  Where did you get the one pictured?

I know a duvet is a plain comforter, but who wants just a plain cotton white one? I always buy a size up in comforters, that's why the one I had was so long. I do the same with duvets and it makes practically no difference. I have a double bed now with a queen duvet and it still barely even hangs over the end.

I know the trick to putting the covers on and all that, but it doesn't make a difference. Nothing will make me hate them less until they morph into real, patterned, colored, different materials that don't "need" a cover!

The one in the picture is the one I bought from Target. It's a king comforter on a queen bed. And I should note that the bed is on the floor, no frame. Just mattress and box spring.

Easy there, some of us like that look. In fact I have a vague obsession that all bed linen should be white, or at least white with a very tiny, subtle pattern....

I still think you might find something if you look for a quilt, or perhaps a bed spread. And since ostensably they're made to go on top of the bed (i.e. on top of the duvet, etc.) they're probably a bit bigger as well. http://www.johnlewis.com/Home+and+Garden/Bedding/Bedspreads/Bedspreads/781/ProductCategory.aspx for a start?

Well if I wanted a plain one, there wouldn't have really been a reason to post, would there?  ;)

I don't like quilts/blankets because they're not as thick or the same kind of consistency as a comforter, but it looks like short of importing one, it's what I'll have to settle for.

Me! I think coloured/patterned bedding is naff!  :P

I always buy a size up in comforters, that's why the one I had was so long.

Sizing won't make any difference in length, though, if you're buying king-sized for a queen-sized mattress. They're the same length.

What you want to do is Google for eiderdowns or quilts.

Now I did see a comforter somewhere ... it was somewhere like Debenhams or House of Fraser.

I have a double bed, so buying a size up does made a difference.

Quilts aren't the same as comforters, and from what I see, eiderdowns aren't either  :-\

I think what people are trying to say is that nothing is called a comforter here and you can google till the cows come home but you're still not going to find one.  The closest thing you're going to find is a quilt or something called a quilt.

i LOVE me some patterned coloured bedding.

I have a double bed, so buying a size up does made a difference.

A UK double mattress is 75" long. If you buy a size up, you'll get a UK king sized duvet, made to fit a 78" long mattress. So you will gain 3".

I think what people are trying to say is that nothing is called a comforter here and you can google till the cows come home but you're still not going to find one.  The closest thing you're going to find is a quilt or something called a quilt.

Exactly. You're in a different country now, so you need to try to be a bit more flexible and understand that what you consider a "proper comforter" is perhaps not that desireable to people in the UK.

What about looking for a quilted bedspread? That would come down to the ground, if that's what you want.

What about finding one you want from a US site and having your family ship it over?
