American driving licence
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:04:37 PM »
My American driving will be expiring soon and I have no plan to go to the US yet. My mum called me and told me I was sent a letter from the DMV to go and renew it in person. Does anyone know another out without me losing my licence. Please advice ASAP. Thanks

No. If they want you in person, you have to go in person. Most likely for an eye test & a new photo.

You'll probably just have to let it expire and live with that.  Mine just expired in August and while it annoys me to no end, sometimes there's just nothing you can do about it.

Hi I let my Ohio driving license expire a few years ago...i had phoned them up closer to renewal time and they said that i needed to be a resident of Ohio...i have to admit i was a bit sad and pissed off at the time...but since I have my UK license now, i can still drive in the US when we hire cars....also it took a lot more skill and lessons for me to earn my UK license...good luck

I used to plan trips back home a few months before it would expire and they never had a problem renewing in advance.  So I kept it going for over 20 years like that. Also, Massachusetts will now let you renew online every other time, I think it is. But that would vary from state to state, of course. But if they want you in person, there's no getting around that.  :(

If you ring the DMV for your state you may be able to get a non-photo license temporarily. PA is allowing me to do it but as soon as I return to the US I need to get the photo one done. I think most states offer the non-photo one for people that cant have their picture taken for religious or other reasons (being indefinitely out of the country).

I had a PA non-photo one for a year because I was out of state for AmeriCorps.

It has wording over where the pic should be and everyone always did a double take.   :)

Yes, just to sound like a broken record- call your DMV or County Clerk's office (oversight of DMV) and ask what your options are.

If it expires, I'm sure you can just renew it in person the next time you go back to the US. Just keep the expired license to show to them that you already had a license. You shouldn't have to take the driving test again or anything like that. You'll probably just have to do the eye exam and pay the fee. I plan to do this as well because I want to keep my California license. I'm not in a hurry to take any UK driving tests because I have enough to worry about at the moment and I want to be able to drive when I visit CA.

I'm not sure that would apply in all states.  I believe in Massachusetts if the license has lapsed over 4 years ago you have to retake the written and practical tests. If it was less than 4 years you can get away with taking only the eye exam.

So I have my US license, but is it still valid if I am no longer a resident of the state it was issued from? I think I had a few weeks/months to file a change of address form, but that would require a new address in the state.

I am going home for the holidays and am concern that if I got into an accident driving my mother's car that the insurance company would say I was not legally licensed.

I really need to get a UK license

Couldn't you use your mothers address? Although she may not be in the same state as your license???

I do not want to be a resident of/domiciled in my mother's sate (or the state of my license) for tax reasons. I am curious if we claim for tax reasons that we are not a resident of a state, if we can still get a drivers license.

Do you have a voting address in that state? How long since you left? Do you have a friend who would put you on the census list?

Since you don't live in that state and you don't earn income there you shouldn't be subject to any state tax.
