Anyone good at finding cheap US to UK flights?
« on: January 10, 2010, 08:22:32 PM »
I really suck at finding online deals, but I know there are people out there that are good at it.  We need a flight for the last two weeks in May, Washington to London/Bristol.  If anyone hears of any decent deals please let me know.  Right now $2500 is about as cheap as I am getting them for two adults and a three year old.  Ouch!   :P

Try vayama. I've never used them but I've heard good things about them.  I just got a result for just over $2,000 Dulles to Heathrow.

A tip I always use is to fly mid week.

Are you flying from Washington, DC or washington State?  Also, are any of the adults under 26? (I got a very pretty good deal through STA, but you have to be under 26...and you could probably ask about the child)

I find that Kayak is much easier to use than Vayama, but I'm sure it's just personal preference (And i used Kayak first).  Other than that, there are tons of other sites that are similar to kayak, but once you've tried one, you've pretty much tried them all, so i'd stick with that.

One thing I've generally heard/experienced is that flights seem to be at their cheapest about 4-6 weeks before departure.  I'm not sure how comfortable you are with waiting until a month and a half before your trip to buy flights, but I've generally paid about $600 for a return trip from North Carolina to London (which stops at IAD).

hope this info helps!

Thanks!  It's Washington DC to the UK... we need to get to Plymouth so any airport is fine that's close. :)

We are both old farts... close to 40 and over 40 though I am a full time student.  My son is 3.

I'm looking, too (Dulles to Heathrow). Maybe we'll end up on the same flight! $711 per ticket is the cheapest I've found for mid-May.

Good luck. We were looking for flights for DW's daughter o come for a visit. Looking at Philly - Manchester - US Air was about $800, so we checked flights from Newark and we found US Air, via Philly, for $700! Crazy that it was cheaper to go up to Newark, fly back to Philly and then across!
We ended up getting Delta from Philly via Paris

Is it just me, or are plane fares looking to be insanely expensive this year?

I'm getting a lot of offers by email (spam)these last few days for us to uk.
As someone has said the airlines are not discounting that far in advance. Try to check the fares in about a month before you intend to go.

I've often found good deals through Cheaptickets.com and their customer service has always been really good when I've called about something.

The current trip we're on from London to Charlotte was $1567 for 2 adults and 1 toddler (with her own seat) round trip.  I thought that was pretty good.

What's STA? I'm under 26. I could use that for further reference as I used miles to pay for this next trip.

It's a travel agency that sells "student fares" on most major airlines (and also sells some travel packages and things for like Spring Break).  There are branches in the US, UK, and probably a few other countries too.

The fares are pretty good, the only catch is that you have to have one of their discount cards (ISIC for students, IYTC for under 26, and ITIC for teachers), which costs $22.  I got one for free through my school when I studied abroad, but bought a new one last year, because it meant I could save about $180 on flights that I was booking pretty late in the game.

They also offer more flexibility than the airlines when it comes to changing your ticket--it's only $50 instead of $200+.  I've had to call them before, and everyone I spoke to was extremely helpful, even regardless of the fact that it was ~2-5 days before Christmas, the BA strike had already started, flights out of london had been grounded a few days prior because of snow, and I wanted my flights back to the US rerouted...
