No Haggis in the US yet
« on: January 26, 2010, 10:08:45 PM »
Haggis has been discussed on here before and I never read about it but I did in a news item today. Sheep lungs and all?

Isn't hot dogs about the same inasmuch as they use left over meat? I'll stick with Kosher hot dogs.
I have no trouble eating Black Pudding, Brawn and Tongue.

Yep, considered a dangerous product by the FDA and not allowed to be imported.

While haggis can't be imported, it is available in the U.S.  It just takes a bit of calling ahead to good butcher shops.  Same with black pudding, loin bacon, etc.

Now, as to why anyone would want to special order a haggis....  Whenever I think of it, I flash back to Mike Myers in 'So I Married an Axe Murderer.'  :)

I ran across this a while back: http://www.scottishhaggis.com/index.aspx

You can order from them if you are in the US, they have a Scottish and an American website. The site I linked to is the American site.

Its sad, I thought it was coming true.

I know there's US haggis, but my Scottish family members have told me it just doesn't taste the same.  I can't comment, as I've never tried it in the US.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Well, it would kind of make sense that it tastes different.  Even if the recipe were exactly the same, meat in the U.S. tastes different.

Different levels of fat and also the oats would be different.  Different minerals in the soil and stuff would affect taste.

"Charlie, do you actually eat haggis?"
"No, in fact I believe most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare!"
LOL

Haggis is actually good stuff!  The real live Scottish version anyway ;-)

I always thought it was banned in the US due to fears of Creutzfeldt-Jakob (human form of "Mad Cow")

It would be cool if they allowed importing again!!!

Oh I love haggis!! I hate how it gets a bad rap because of what it's made out of.   My family still get disgusted when I tell them my favourite meal to have is chicken stuffed wth haggis and a delicious whiskey sauce my DH makes to go with it.

From what I've been told, it's the lung that is the problem because, apparently, tuberculosis can't be cooked out of it.   :-X

But I could be wrong.

We serve haggis from a can every year for Hogmanay.  It tastes just like most of the haggis I had in Scotland although it's made in the US.  So if anyone in the US wants it, it is available  ;D

I can't get passed the seasoning or texture; the content doesn't bother me a bit.  The canned stuff is gummy, skinless and hard to fry.  I let my husband and his guests dig in   ;)

Not only can we not get Scottish haggis, we can't get any British meat products.  We can get sausages imported from Ireland, though.  I would love to get some of the square sausages.  I love those!  A fish supper sounds really good right now too as we are buried deep in snow in my part of the world.  Yum, hot greasy chips!!!!

I have to say I would be in the category of those who woudn't even try it. It's not the thought of what it has in it, what's it's stuffed in, or anything of that nature.

I cannot, and I mean absolutely cannot, eat liver or heart. It's the taste. It tastes like I'm trying to eat a piece of metal, so much so that it makes my teeth hurt. I have tried time after time, cooked every way imaginable, because the smell while cooking is wonderful. But the moment I get the first taste my stomach goes to DEFCON 1 and it's all over.

I have never found anything else that affects me this way and I am not a picky eater. Escargot, squid, octopus...you name it I can eat it but haggis I'm afraid will have to stay one of those dishes that I would politely have to decline.

My DW talked about this last night when we were coming home in the car from Las Vegas and she said couldn't eat anything 'internal'. That included kidneys, tongue, heart and liver. I got to thinking about this and I think people got to eating these things because it was a necessity. I think the subject came up because we saw a business that said 'sushi bar'. She said that there have been people who have ended up in surgery after eating sushi. Raw fish?
It is trendy now to go to Thai food restaurants. What is Thai food? I'll stick with my F & C and Indian Curry ;) (oh, and lets not forget Mexican)
