Living in England (from Massachusetts)
« on: August 10, 2004, 05:41:37 PM »
Hi All,

I've been living here in England for seven months now, originally from Massachusetts. I moved to England to live with my boyfriend who is from this area.

I love my new life in England but do miss so much from the states. I would like to talk to others who have also moved into this area or any other area of the uk.

I'm starting to settle in but i'm sure like the rest of you , I have my moments that I feel like an outsider still.  I've been reading the posts  and can relate to so much of it.  Some of the stories are so funny and true!!

Looking forward to hearing from you!!

Nancy   :)

Hey Nancy, welcome to the forum.  I've only been here a short time myself, but there are a lot of friendly people here.  :)  So what aprt of England do you live in?  I live in West Yorkshire.

Again, welcome!

Hi Nancy!  Welcome!!!!  I am from NY, but lived in MA for almost 11 years between Uni and 29 years old.  Where in MA are you from?  I was in the Cambridge/Boston/Somerville Area.  Also lived in Arlington for a year.  I live in Surrey now.

Do you find England to be very much like MA?  I always have.  My DH loved Boston when we visited last year.  Every person I have met from thye UK has said the same, that they loved it there and it felt like home.

Thanks for the Welcome!

I'm living in the Stoke On Trent Area of Staffordshire  (West Midlands) - anyone close by?

I'm originally from Massachusetts, a smaller city outside of Boston, called Brockton, about 25 miles south of Boston.  I miss Massachusetts and the New England area, but I do find parts of England that remind me of back in the states.

I met my boyfriend on the internet  over a year ago and we decided it would be best for me to move out to england instead of him coming to the states.

I happen to be a dual citizen of the USA and the UK - because my father is from Scotland and moved to america when he was 21.  So, my mom is american and my dad is Scottish - which entitled me to apply for a British Passport which I did several years ago when I used to travel to Scotland quite a bit.  I do have family still in Scotland, but haven't been up to see them just yet.

So having dual citizenship has made it so much easier for me to come and live here and work here without any visas or govt paperwork, which I know a lot of you have to go through.

I'm going back to the states in two weeks to visit my family, I can't wait to see them and enjoy some of the nice summer weather, boy do I miss that! haha.

Feel free to contact me - I would love to hear from you all again!

Nancy

Oh you lucky dual-citizenship girl, you :)  Must make it a bit easier knowing you could pack up and leave and return to the other country tomorrow without much hassle if need be.  Anyway, welcome to the site!

hi again!

Thanks again for the warm welcome.   I'm enjoying reading the board.

Yes you are right, being a dual citizen has been very helpful in my move, and made it so much more easier on me  -  except for the Inland Revenue - they keep sending me letters wanting to know where I have been working all the previous years - they just don't understand that I've lived my life in the states and just moved here, I don't know how many people at the Inland Revenue office I have to tell my story too, but they still can't figure it out, how I just appeared in this country! LOL

haven't they had any other dual citizens before me??  hehehehe

So once again, I'm spending my morning calling the office after receiving another letter from them - this time wanting to know where I worked in the UK in 2003 -  I didn't move here till this year! LOL

You think hearing my accent would be the give away that i'm not british, but american, LOL

Oh well, if this is the only hassle I have here with paperwork, I can't complain because I know how difficult it is for many of you with your visa's.   I wish you all the best!!

LOL.  I got asked the other day if I was Canadian (LOL, again).  Anyway, welcome to a great board from another newbie here.  And, I have to agree, that dual citizenship thing must be great. Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who has to deal with the visa redtape (ah well, it's all worth it).

SongMistress:  I had to laugh at your post - Everytime I meet someone here in England, they ask me if I am Canadian!!!   I don't get why they think I'm Canadian - I mean after all, there are plenty of American Shows on the TV here, so they can tell an American Accent, but NO, I always get, are you Canadian? LOL

Does this Happen to anyone else?  Is it because I'm from the Northeast of the US?  Just curious.

Katie :
Yea, another MassGal - What part of Massachusetts are you from? I'm from Brockton, just south of Boston.  I'm going back in just over a week to visit my family, I can't wait!!  :)

Well, that time a couple of weeks ago was the first time I had gotten the Canadian question.  Usually I just get, "Where are you from?"  Some people haven't even assumed right away that I'm not English....I guess since there are so many different kinds of English accents.  They can differ from one county to the next.  And, almost everyone here thinks I have a beautiful accent.  My fiance' thinks it's sexy....which is why I am going to try my best to keep it from softening too much....but, I know that it eventually will....and, personally, I think that's cool!  :D
