Craving Pickles
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:01:40 PM »
Hi.  I have been looking for the equivalent of hamburger pickles.  I have spent a fortune on jars of pickles that end up being too sweet, and I'm afraid that either I'm forgetting what they taste like or I just can't find something suitable.  I looked at the thread on American Food and found them online, but I refuse to pay £6 plus shipping for bottle of Vlasic.

I'm craving a peanut butter and pickle sandwhich and it's getting desperate!  I'm about to walk into McDonalds and ask them if they have any they'd sell me.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Pengi

Have you tried Krakus brand pickled cucumbers? Available in Asda and Morrison's (and maybe others) with the Polish products.
DW finds these ok.

p.s. peanut butter and pickle sandwich?!?  :-\\\\

Try the Polish sections of food markets maybe?

The don't really do dill pickles here.  Even things labeled "dill cucumber pickles" are dead sweet.  The closest I have found is a polish variety that I have seen at Asda and Waitrose (maybe Sainsburys too?).  It is close but not exactly right but it will do in a pinch.

What I have recently done though is bring back from the US dill relish that comes in a squeeze bottle (like ketchup).  Was easier to transport than jars of pickles and definitley tastes like it should.  It is in relish form but for me it's the taste I am looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions!  I'll give the Krakus brand a try.  I've tried to explain what I'm looking for to the chap that owns the Polish stall in the market, and he's given me some to try but I must not be able to explain what they are well enough because they've not been right, one was almost fizzy  :-\\\\.  Also, the ones from Lidl and Aldi are edible, but I wouldn't put them in a sandwich

Don't knock a peanut butter and pickle sandwich til you try it, it really is better than you'd think.  I ate them for lunch (with Annie's Mac and Cheese) every day when I was last in the States.  My husband was disgusted lol.

A co-worker is going to Florida and he'll get me whatever I request, but I'm afraid I can't wait until the end of June! I may ask my sister to send some of the relish.

Thanks again!

Ive tried just about every "american" style dill pickle out there. From every shope i can find. I have found NOTHING that even remotely resembles what im used to. Sooooo I either wait till i go for a visit or pay the attrocious price on one of the online merrican food sites for a fix.
I'd would much rather go without than have what they think is a good pickle here..
PS I actually did ask a local mc donalds when i first moved here 11 years ago if i could buy some off them also asked a nearby subway.. but nope neither would bite. Also asked if they could tell me where they get theirs from so i could write to said company. I did actually email them and was told they only sold to the commercial businesses.. thats how desperate I was to have my pickle slices :)..
I usually buy two jars of vlasic zesty dill slices and wrap em each in bubble wrap and then put that into a large ziploc(with a real zip lol ) and then pack it in my checked baggage.
Thats my pickle story and im sticking with it rofl    ;D :o

I'm with Kaylesh...i miss my pickles. I was actually really picky about pickles in the states and here i take what I can get. I haven't had any luck either (other than subway letting me take a side order of them home). My mom has been able to find small plastic containers of mini pickles she mails over here. They come in packaging similar to what pudding would in the states.

I hadn't even thought of Subway! Maybe I need to get a part time job at McDonalds.  They'd find me sat in the breakroom in a pool of pickle juice cradling a large jar of pickles while eating them by the handfull!

I know women crave pickles during pregnancy, but I didn't expect it would have me in the kitchen sniffing a bottle of dill trying to get my 'fix'.

I may just have to break down and get them from the online place or wait til June.  I'll give anything a try at this point.  I've even considered making them myself, although the whole pickling thing scares me.

OOOOh boy do I miss pickles too! I have also tried most every brand and become so disappointed that they are so sweet. I have now switched to a green olive addiction! That is a great idea about the relish though. When I go home I will be sure to bring back a bottle or two.
Follow your bliss.

I like the Krakus ones. They are sour but also a little sweet, but I actually dig that. I guess I am used to it now. I'm not sure I remember the flavour of a proper dill. The Krakus dill cucumbers are really the only ones I've found here that I like, though.  :-\\\\

Krakus do 2 different ones.....check the labels as one contains sugar and the other doesn't.
Fortunately DW doesn't seem to have the same problem with pickles that many here have, shes never mentioned anything about any brand of gherkins that we buy although she did mention that the Krakus ones are the closest.

Oh, I think I've only ever had the ones with sugar in them. I don't mind, as they have a nice, tangy flavour, but I'm curious to try the ones without. Where have you bought those? A jar lasts us so long, I can't even remember where we usually have bought them. Maybe Morrisons?

Morrison's and Asda. I think the ones labelled as Dill Cucumbers have sugar in, the ones labelled Cucumbers in brine don't........or is it the other way round?

Wait a minute.....that contradicts itself! I meant she's never made a negative comment about any!  ;D
