« on: June 24, 2010, 09:00:28 PM »
Just a little note to say that I am getting married to my sweet sweet love in 37 days and I can hardly wait! I move to the UK in 38 days!! We actually are technically already married though..had a civil ceremony in May for visa purposes but the BIG wedding is VERY SOON!! SO EXCITED!! We plan to go to Scotland for a little honeymoon. Any suggestions on what we should check out!?

Thanks!!

Hannah

Hmmmm...everything. :)

I haven't been everywhere in Scotland just yet, but if it were my honeymoon in Scotland I'd want to go to Fife.  It's absolutely gorgeous there just now and all of the seaside villages are wonderful.  You'll also have a better chance of dry weather on that side of the country.

I would also think any of the isles off the Western Coast would be nice: Mull, Skye, Arran, Iona, Bute...

I haven't been too far north yet, but perhaps someone who has (or one of our more northern dwelling members) will come along and offer some suggestions.

I don't know what exactly it is that you're looking to do, but there are certainly plenty of castles, lochs, villages, and whatnot to explore here.  Is there any sort of stuff you had in mind?

And congrats on the wedding!  :)

I've got to voice a aye for Fife Area.. Ok ok so I live in Fife  ;D But when I first came here from Massachusetts I lived for 3 years up in Aberdeen. Didn't like it .. was tooo cold and tooo much gray granite for my liking..
Here in Fife we have it all .. Lovely seaside villages with beaches.. Lovely countryside etc..
Tho really I love most of scotland full stop so Perth and Kinross area is lovely too. Historically Glencoe,Culloden are neat as well . .
Really hard to chose one place :)

Perfect time of the year to visit Scotland and especially the Highlands! You'll have to see the Highland Games at one of your destinations! Here's a listing of the games http://www.shga.co.uk/events.php

Glencoe is my favourite place in Scotland, so far. Glencoe is pure heaven. I stood there spinning around looking at the Glens and tears were just welling up in my eyes. It's what I imagine heaven to look like. Ok ok maybe I'm going a little overboard. But, it really is lovely.

Auchmithie (tiny village near Arbroath) would be my second recommendation. It doesn't look like much at first view. But, there is a little path between the houses that leads down to the bottom of some very gorgeous cliffs.  In Auchmithie, have dinner at the But 'n' Bed.  Be sure and book reservations though as they only have a few tables. Stop in Arbroath for some famous Arbroath smokies.

I would recommend a 5 or 6 day driving honeymoon starting from the Southeast part of Scotland.  Oban, Loch Lomond, maybe some of the Islands, and work your way up to Glencoe.  Ullapool is the only place that I found to be boring and not worth the drive. Then work your way back down through the heart of Perth, Angus, and the Kingdom of Fife.

Kaylesh-- where aboots are ya in Fife? I'm nearby in Dundee.  Btw, Fifers are the ONLY ones I cannae understand.  LOL

What do you want to see and how much do you actually feel like sightseeing? It is your honeymoon afterall  ;)

Ullapool is the only place that I found to be boring and not worth the drive.

I love Ullapool, I think its gorgeous! Not too far a drive for me though.

Castles? Lochs? Hills? Seaside? Sheep?  The beaten path like Edinburgh/Glasgow or off the beaten path?

Applecross. Definitely need to take the drive to Applecross just for the journey.

Skye is gorgeous a not too much a hassle to get.  Orkney!!  Fife. Oban.  What do you want to see?

Ullapool is beautiful, the drive is fantastic and there's some great restaurants.  I wish I could live there.  Gairloch is nice too and Plockton if you go around that way.

We've been to Edinburgh and He proposed to me in the Highlands (not that we don't want to go there again.) We will be "stationed" in Perth (a family friend gave us their home for a few days). Our goal is to just go explore Scotland. I am really interested in seeing some live music and really seeing the culture. I LOVE castles and all the history too.

I think with all the chats about Fife  or Fithe?(sp?) I think we'll have to try and make it there.

Any great food or music suggestions?

Thanks everyone! This is fantastic!

Fife is the region. Lots of lovely villages here from Dunfermline(the ancient capital of Fife) to Anstruther a lovely wee fishing village and the best fish n chips on the planet( least i think so ) to St Andrews the home of golf :).. Lots of places here in Fife and all over Scotland to visit.
If you are in Perth there are lots of nice places to visit in that area as well. Really depends on time what you are wanting to see and how much time you want to spend driving from place to place.

not to offend anyone from fife, but it's not the best of regions in scotland, i'm sorry to say. the west coast (ayr and the likes) has a bad reputation, too.

if you're coming for a few days, i recommend the borders - not far from the capital, and the views and towns are stunning (except for galasheils) - a visit to hawick is a must!

villages along the east cost are brilliant, too. next, east lothian, perth and kinross, and the highlands.

Naaa no offense taken. :) I have traveled about scotland and there are lots n lots of lovely areas, from Oban to Mull to Skye, to the Borders to Inverness, the Highlands,Glencoe,Loch Lomond,Killin,Melrose.. too many to mention. I've never been disappointed anywhere i've been so far. Well to be honest im not a real city person so I tend to avoid them.
Wish I had the time/£££ to do more traveling about cos I would do just that . :)

We did a Scotland trip last summer, and it was excellent!  Before we left I asked a Scottish acquaintance for suggestions about driving around the country, and here is his very detailed response (he wrote it with the idea that we'd fly into and out of Edinburgh):

Start from Edinburgh.  You will probably do most driving in the forenoons...... the sun will be behind you most of the way, if you start from Edinburgh!

Why not Glasgow?  Edinburgh is a historic and cultural city.  Glasgow is nowadays a modern up to date city Edinburgh has many unique sights.

Head north on the M90 and cross the Forth Road bridge.  You will see one of the wonders of Scottish bridge building on your right hand side - The Forth Rail bridge with its great cantilever structure.

Once over the bridge follow the M90 to just past Kinross
Branch off on the A91 and make a detour to my home town, St. Andrews - ONLY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GOLF.

otherwise:
After crossing the bridge take the A91 at Kinross and head west past Dollar You will pass some places with Rob Roy history.
Continue to Stirling.  Here is Braveheart country. A monument to him and the bridge where he smashed the english. Also the site of the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn where my forefather , King Robert The Bruce thrashed the english!!!
Also Stirling Castle.

Head north, getting on the A94.... more Rob Roy country.
Head north past Lochearnhead. At the T junction a short detour to the east on the A827 takes you to Killin... nice views.
Return along the A827 and continue west A85, to Crianlarach, branch north on the A82, past Tyndrum, over the hilss and into Glen Coe. Very impressive peaks and dark history around the Massacre of Glencoe!
Arriving at the Caledonia canal...pass North Ballachulish and up to Fort William.
Head West on the A830 and at Glenfinnan see the railway viaduct made famous in the Harry Potter movies and at the same place the Glenfinnan monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie....

Follow the A830 to the end of the road at Mallaig and take the ferry to The Isle of Skye.  Impressive peaks loved by climbers.
A 851 in Skye, then right on the A87 and over the hated modern bridge to the mainland again.
Head east on the A87... then the A887 until you are back at the Caledonian canal and Invermoriston.

Going north on the A82 with Loch Ness on your right.

Stop at Urquhart Castle and you have a very nice Visitor centre and the castle. From here sightings of Nessie are most common.
Back on the road north again.
Drumnadrochit has a Nessie centre with and interesting presentation on the history of Nessie.

Headin north again to Inverness.

The highlands to the north of the Caledonian canal tend to get boring..... so I wouldn't suggest going further up than Inverness.

best and quickest route back to Edinburgh is the A9.
But slow down when you get to Aviemore.
There are a lot of whisky ditilleries there famous for their single malts!  Also the Cairngorm Whisky Centre.....
Down at perth you leave the Highlands....... and get onto the M90 and back over the Forth bridge and to Edinburgh.
