Oh yeah - been meaning to comment on this thread all week & kept forgetting!  Another vote here for:  A good pair of walking boots is all you need & are multi-purpose.  Or for walking in town, good dress boots.

TBH, I think your b/f is right, Wellies are superfluous.  The above two would see you through town & country, and mud, plus walking boots will have a surer grip on slippery surfaces & are far more comfortable for walking any kind of distance (if you're going rambling around the Lake District, climbing fells, etc - you definitely want walking boots!).

On the other hand, if you just want Wellies to be fashionable (i.e., another pair of shoes for your collection/selection), then go for it.

I've been here 6+ years and haven't needed Wellies yet.  For anything I might need them for, my walking boots are more fit for purpose - I have two pair of them & I'm looking to buy a third pair...  ;)

I love my wellies.  They make me feel English!  I think mine are too heavy for walking.  I find them very handy for traipsing around the garden when it's cold, wet or snowy.  I also wear them when I put out the trash.  Personally, I just think they are plain fun.  I'd get a pair.  I have long thick socks that I wear with the wellies - I pull them up over my trousers, then stick my feet (one at a time!) into the wellies.  Have some fun!

P.S. even though you'll read this first - I'd buy the wellies in England.  It's one less thing to ship.

The only reason I'd buy the wellies in the US is if I had honking great feet, which I do.

Although I've lived in England about 8 years now, and never owned a pair of wellies, every time I think I want to buy some, the local shops never seem to have feminine, non-army green pairs in a size 8 (US 10).

I keep meaning to go to Brighton and look for some groovy wellies, but then I'd have to carry them around for the day. Bleeech.

So if you have a US size 9 foot or smaller, they have some really cute boots over here to choose from. And if your feet ARE smaller than a 9, may all your hair fall out. :P

Hahaha! I wear a US  8/9, and my DB's mother is always astonished and tries to tell me that I'm  no a UK 6/7....Even thought I've proven this to her numerous times before, she'll never believe me.  In the US, it seems pretty average/normal to me...but I guess British people have teeny tiny feet?!?!

Personally, I love a good ole' rain boot.  I just think they're cute, whether they're necessary or not! ;)

I have fairly small feet, but I am a size 7.5 in the US (that's a size 5 in the UK... which is the national average). I don't think your feet are very big at all... you're only a size 5.5-6.5 in the UK and I know several UK women with the same size feet (if not bigger) :-\\\\.

At least you can find shoes!

My UK shoe size ranges between a 2 and a 4, which means that in some styles, I can't even fit into adult shoes.

Haha sweetpeach we're in the same boat- I'm 1 3.5-4.5 UK size.  And I'm 5'6, so my feet and hands are way too small for my body.   ;)

Those are my shoe sizes, too! But, I'm 4'11". So, I suppose I'm ok.

I feel your pain!  I need a UK 1.5 - 2.  At a stretch, I can do a 2.5 if it's something I'll wear thick socks with.  Very nearly EVERY pair of grown-up shoes I own has to be special-ordered.  So so frustrating.   :(

And my wellies are Hunter Juniors.  Any wellies in a "normal" women's size are so big I nearly walk out of them!

I wear a size 9 and buying shoes in the UK is nearly impossible!!! Honestly!

I wear a UK 7.5 - 8 and had no problem finding cute wellies in that size (wellies that fit my ginormous calves is another matter).

I wear my half calf wellies when it rains. I don't want to get to work with wet feet. Everyone at work makes fun of me but I'm the one laughing when I point out I'm the one with dry feet.

I think you'll know if they're worth it for you when you get here. If you're walking around thinking "god, I wish I had waterproof shoes" then get some. If you're happy without them then save your money.

This place has every kind of wellie you could want: http://www.easy-wellies.co.uk/
