Broad Beans
« on: August 08, 2010, 06:36:19 PM »
I got broad beans in my veg box this week and I've only ever had them straight up, but, personally, I think they're vile! I've never found a way to enjoy them. I don't want to waste them though, any thoughts on how to make them better? Would a curry mask their flavour? Anything else?

I use them in a couscous salad recipe I make. It originally called for lima beans, but I can't find them here so I use broad beans instead.

I adore broad beans in any shape or form! They're my favourite veg!

You can make a lovely dip out of mashed broad beans with peas.

I've made it a few times and it's delish!

I second Chary's idea of dip! Or Frittatas!

They're gorgeous in frittatas, mmmm.

Or this one with feta and mint mmmmm

I used to hate them as a kid and only tried them again last year.

Having taken them out of the pod, make sure you take the outer membrane off them, blanching them will make it easier. This membrane makes them taste bitter.

This recipe is delicious

I usually use cod instead of hake, just any firm white fish will do, and I used frozen peas.

I know you're meant to shell them (esp older ones with tough shells), but I love that bitter part! Yum!  :P

Yes, but I was meaning that the OP doesn't like them, that could be why. I didn't like them as a kid and my mum never shelled them. Now I'm fine with them as I've got older and tastes develop and I prefer stronger flavours.

That hake looks good Tykeman. And definitely I will be shelling- that may be part of my problem! There's few foods I don't like, I'm determined to make these workable.  :)

Agree with the point you were making.  We eat them either way.  But yes, PB, if you're not liking them - definitely shell 'em!

Along with all the great suggestions that everyone else listed, in Spain they are often served as a tapa with a good Spanish ham, called Habas con Jamon.  Jamón serrano is good, but if you can lay your hands on some jamón ibérico, pata negra especially - well, droooool!   :D

To me they are gross, but yes I didn't know to shell them.

I miss lima beans so much.

Hmm shelled...still don't think they taste very good

I'll have to curry them or cook in bacon fat or something as I have more  :-\\\\

You know, you're allowed to think a vegetable is gross! We won't tell!  ;)

I think maybe they're the Marmite of vegetables.  :P

If I lived nearer you, Phatbeetle, I'd be happy to take some of those broad beans off your hands!
