I'm a New Englander who loves Olde England
« on: December 06, 2010, 07:02:18 PM »
Having been born and bred in New England (Massachusetts); there are constant reminders here of our former British colonial staus, just about  everywhere you look-
a good 90% of MA towns, and nearly every county is named for a namesake in England. I'm an avid American colonial history buff, and can say with certainity that had I lived in Boston in the 1770s, I would have been a loyalist, and would have moved to London following the revolution.
I am very proud of the English heritage that permiates all facets of early New England history. I was very impressed when I finallly crossed the pond to visit England- this may sound silly, but I felt I was 'home'. I love the history, the culture, the humor, and the people. As a New Englander, I feel a closer bond with England than I do to the rest of the US. I'm a teacher, with speciality in Special education- and work with kids with moderate disabilities. I hope  to teach in England-perhaps for the short term- or prehaps for something more permanent- and who knows, create a new life there. My question is this- how difficult is it for SPED techers from the US in procuring temporary teaching prospects in England?- I am growing weary of the US- the constant war mongering, Bible thumping, plus my inabilty to afford decent health insurance are things that are really tryng my patience. Any other New Englanders on this page?

Hello and welcome!  In the visas section, there is a lot of discussion about how difficult or easy it is to get work permits.  Please feel free to have a look around and there are lots of friendly people who can help you with work permit questions and any thing else about English culture!  Good luck pursuing your dream! :)

Hi TitanicExplorer from a fellow New Englander (born, bred and still in MA...for now).  There are a lot of us on this site (some still here in the US and some already in the UK).  Like persephone mentioned, there is a TON of information on the visas section and the moderators here keep things pretty up-to-date, so you can know that you're in good hands.

We have some things in common...1) I worked in a SPED school in Boston as a para for a while; 2) I've always felt a kinship to England and 3) I love New England's history...it's so rich and long compared to a lot of the US.

Good luck with it all!   ;D

wow, we have alot in common! I work in SPED in Somerville, always felt a kindship to England, and love New England history. Here in Somerville MA, the 'Grand Union' flag always waves atop Prospect hill (The first American flag- 13 stripes, and instead of stars, the British Union Jack in the corner). It makes me wish we had never cut ties with England... 8 (

I do think New Englanders have a closer historic bond with the British (as well as the Irish) than other parts of the US- so you're more apt to find anglophiles in Massachusetts and New Hampshire than in Ohio or California..

Just to be a little nit picky, but don't forget that plenty of other European powers colonized the Americas (just to name some: the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, German, Russian). And don't forget Native American tribe history which is just as complex and intricate as European history. I come from the South-West and our history is definitely filled with just as much European conquest (again the Spanish) and war (Texas Revolution, Mexican-American War) as the North-East. 'History' did not begin because the Europeans arrived.

right you are- I live in a community that has a vibrant Portuguese and Irish population. We still have loads of young Brazilians coming into my city- i love it, it adds to the richness of the local culture.
That's one thing I really do love about America- it is a microcosm of the rest of the world..
I do love the old world Spanish and native American influences of the southwest. New Mexico is a beautiful state- just a tad toasty for  this yankee- But I'll take the dry heat over humidity any day of the week...

I have to agree.  I live in East Boston where it's rich with Irish hertiage, some Italian still lingers, then we have a mix of Hispanic (Puerto Rican, Dominican, A LOT of Salvadorian) and some Brazilian.

I loved learning about the various Native American tribes in the NE area when we were in school...just a shame it wasn't more noted (hate what was done to them, but who's having the last laugh now with the casinos and such   ;)).

Hee!  More Massholes!  I say that with love.  ;D Our last stop in the US was Cambridge (MA).  RI has been "home base" for 25+ years and I went to school in Maine.  I love London, but I do miss Cambridge.  However, I do not miss digging out my car countless times each winter.

When i decided to come here .. it was Scotland or bust for me.. I had noooo desire to move to England .. I had always dreamt of and wanted to live in Scotland.. had been to differant parts of UK on holidays. My gran was born here in Scotland and I say for me it was in the blood :)
