Help! I made my plane reservation in married name
« on: December 22, 2010, 02:03:59 PM »
I am supposed to fly out tomorrow and I just realized that I made my plane reservation in my married name. My passport has my maiden name in it. The woman at the call center in the airline told me to bring my marriage certificate and any ID I have and she hopes they will let me thru.

My passport has my marriage visa in it that says I am married to my husband and states his last name (that would prove that my married name is his)
I have my marriage certificate proving we are married
I have a provisional license in my married name (it has my picture)
I also have my american drivers license showing my picture and has my maiden name.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? and were they let thru?  ??? ???

From my understanding, your passport and the ticket must be in the same name.  Perhaps the airline will allow you to change the ticket to your maiden name for a fee.

I think it's really tough to say as the security measures have become so much stricter now.  I don't think they'd allow it in the US.  I'd really try to change it.

on the website it says that if there are any issues with the ticket meaning the name and such you have to go to the desk..

According to the TSA's Secure Flight Program, passengers are required to use their name  (as it appears on the government ID) when booking flights, regardless of if you use another name in everyday life.

A few years ago, I booked a ticket and saw that somehow I had entered my first name and middle name in the same box and it was all run together as my first name.  I panicked and called the airline and they told me I would have to rebook the ticket (and pay the cancellation fee for the original ticket) to change the name.  They absolutely would not change it. Luckily this didnt need to be changed, but I would think your surname is a much bigger deal than an extended firstname.

Can you get to the embassy and get an emergency passport issued in your married name?  You don't need an appointment for an emergency passport application and it only takes a few hours so if your flight is in the late afternoon or evening, you should have enough time.  All you need is your proof of leaving the country soon and your old passport.  I think that's a good reason and probably cheaper than a name change fee (which probably means a new ticket).  I lost my passport in South Korea a few years ago and had a new passport in hand an hour after walking into the embassy.  It might not be that easy/quick but it's worth a shot.

Yeah, the problem is that while they may let you out of the UK you will have a hard time returning from the US, where the name on the ticket absolutely must match the name on the passport, and they have really cracked down in this.

In talking to some others this has happened to I think they will let me go thru and I may have to pay a fee. The fee may be unavoidable it is my own stupid fault for putting my married name. But we are going to check with US Airways in Philly when we get there (if I get there) to see what I need to do. I may either apply for a new passport in the US with my married name or they may make me pay another fee..either way I have to pay..I don't have time to get an emergency passport. I am going to just have to try my luck at the airport and see what happens. I wish I wasn't such an idiot and would have remembered to put my maiden name on my ticket.

The Virgin fee was 30.00.

Have you checked in online yet?  When we checked in online it gave us a link and a number to call to change the names.

it says online your name must be the same on your passport and your ticket. If there are any discrepancies go to the check in counter. But I will try to check in online and see if I get the same thing as you..thanks for that bookgrl

Virgin had a charge, but Continental just had a verify button that said is this name correct.

It wasn't.  It said FirstnameMS Lastname and FirstnameMR Last name.  How that happened I have no idea, but it let me change the name, for no fee, right on the page.

I went back on US airways website and tried to check in like you said and a button pops up that says the name on your passport must match your ticket..does it? I said no and then a message said you need to check in at the airport. So they must deal with it right then an there..so we shall find out tomorrow if there is a fee or anything..wish me luck

It should be fine.  Just take your evidence and if all else fails cry.  ;)
