Airfares from US are expensive!
« on: January 29, 2011, 11:37:14 PM »
My parents are coming out to visit in May from Chicago. They told me the airfare prices are about $800 per person! I told them to check out kayak and go to the actual AA and BA websites. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I found good deals on atiflights.com (sadly they're US-originating only, or I'd use them to go back and visit). I flew for ~$580 round-trip, but that was also in November (not the height of tourist season!).

Most of the time I find the best deals on the actual website of the airline. Virgin has some amazing deals right now but only up until April. Surprisingly, Expedia gave me an awesome last minute deal better than the Lufthansa website, by far. Could have been a last minute thing though. Like it was said, May is the start of tourist season.

I thought $800 sounded reasonably good? I paid $700 direct SFO to LHR, 7 days prior to flying. I don't know the typical rates from Chicago though...

Try Iceland Air.  Their prices are reasonable, as well as their baggage policies!

Yeah, they are. :(

But $800 isn't *too* bad for that time of year. DH and I paid nearly $1000 last summer for our house-scouting trip last July.

The tickets I booked for myself and my son to fly back to Ohio in March were around $600 and I considered that a good deal. Prices seemed to increase dramatically after Easter time.

Yeah, I've been travelling between the UK and the US on and off for the last 16 years and I've never found a flight in the summer months for less than £500 (between $800 and $1,000 depending on the exchange rate)! When we flew from the UK to the US in July a couple of years ago our flights cost £700 each (which I think was about $1300)!

The only times that I've found flights to the US cheaper than $800 have been when I've travelled in either January or March.

Aer Lingus is usually the cheapest from Chicago.  You can find them on Kayak.  SAS has also started some even cheaper flights from O'Hare, which on Kayak, via Vayama.com.  That's who I booked with for my flight over in March.

Thanks guys! I will pass on this information. I felt like $800 was a lot from Chicago. When I used to fly from there to the UK (granted, it was about 2 years ago) my tickets were usually about $500-$600. I think they cut back the amount of international flights in the US making the cost of flights go up. I will definitely pass on this information. I told them it could be more expensive due to the big wedding and school holidays which is why they were going to wait until May.

My daughter got a return ticket from Tucson to LGW March 10-21 for $738.  I thought this was a pretty good price as later in the year it will be about $1200

I was going to suggest Aer Lingus as well. They have some pretty good deals going right now. They're have to fly via Dublin, but it's no biggie really.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I was able to find LHR to DFW return last year over $600 in June last year. It is possible to find something for less than 500 quid, I mean :P

I have found that flying to Belfast is relatively inexpensive.  I had a return ticket through there last May/June and it was $450 after taxes on Continental from Newark, NJ.  Then I just got an EasyJet flight from there to wherever else I was going in the UK for £10-£30, can't recall precisely.

Currently looking at one-way tickets from the US through there and the price is $575, after taxes for the same time of year.  All other one-way tickets to Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, etc. are at least $1000.

It seems like it's as cheap to fly through as Dublin, but you don't have to worry about the whole "Dublin Loophole" stuff because of course it's the UK.

Well, the 'Dublin Loophole' is really only an issue for people coming in on visas.  I don't think it makes a difference one way or another for tourists.  At least, not at the moment.
