Sickness
« on: February 08, 2011, 09:11:40 AM »
Oh dear god when will it stop?

Apologies for the melodrama but I'm severely sleep deprived. I went back to work last month and the girls entered nursery. They went there for about a week before I started work and from first day they had runny noses. I wasn't so bothered about that but the runny noses have turned into coughs and then colds.

Abby is worse at night. She coughs so hard that she wakes herself up and is unable to go back to sleep without Jon or I nursing her to sleep.

Izzie is worse at day. It's obviously hurting her but even with a regular dose of calpol any coughing fits result in her crying and/or whimpering and becoming very very clingy.

Also, because the girls share the same room Abby is keeping Izzie up all night. They're both so tired. And I'm tired. And Jon is tired. Both of us have picked up their colds, too.

Izzie just wasn't up for going to nursery today so I'm staying at home this morning until Jon can come home and watch her. Abby was fine enough to go to nursery and it's just easier to only have one baby.

I went to the GP but he said there was nothing we can do. We've got saline drops and calpol and we've put their cots at an angle but it's been a month of this and I just want it to stop.

A couple of weeks ago both girls picked up a stomach bug and it took a week for that to clear up.  They just seem to catch everything at the moment and it's all coming from the nursery. It's really frustrating.

There's a vicks rub-alike for babies called Snuffle Babe I've used with Jean. Also try olbas oil on a tissue somewhere near them (or I think they have little plug in olbas vaporiser things too).

Cheers. I have one of those. I forgot about it. I'll give it a go.

Sorry to hear your little ones are sick :( When I went back to work after mat leave (DS was about 6 mos old), he was sick *constantly* for the first year. I don't think his nose stopped running the entire time he was in nursery. It does get better as their immunities are made stronger, but it's hard when they always seem sick.

((HUGS))  I know how frustrating it is. The fact it's winter and everything is just soggy and damp and cold doesn't help.

In the US I'd say make sure there's enough humidity in their room but I suspect that's not a problem there?

Oh you poor thing & them too!  If it's any consolation, it *might* be that at their age, they end up with a milder case.

I had chicken pox when I was only 6 months old & I had a very mild case - because I still carried certain immunities from my mother, or at least that's the thinking with that.

They are of course picking up everything at nursery that is going around.  I always say - children are little germ factories.  :P

They so friggin are.

They both seem to have a very mild case of it. Not very many spots and they haven't got any other symptoms, like fever. The doctor seems to think it'll go by very quickly too because of their age.

So that's all well and good but by god, I'm tired of them being ill. Izzie just got over her chest infection last week and had a whole 2 days of being happy and well before this hit. FFS.

Poor little mites & poor mummy!  :(

As I recall, they have a big birthday coming up this spring, don't they?  Maybe their second year will be much healthier?  :)

Yeah, they're 1 in April. I just keep thinking that at least they'll have a stronger immunity when they start school. Best get it all out of the way now.

Oh Ashley...how awful for you & the family. It just makes me so thankful that DD has never been to nursery (or need to go to nursery) so she never picks up anything too drastic like Chicken Pox and thankfully she'll be immunized first thing when we get back to the US next month.

Hope they're feeling better soon so you can feel better too.

When I had it at 6 months, my mom counted only 20 spots on me!  Hope it goes by quickly & you can all get some sleep.

Gettin it early is the best. Really. Sammy had it at 3 and it was gone very quickly. The only thing he did wrong was come down with it LITERALLY the day Jake was born. So Jake and I were in the hospital for about 4 days and poor Sammy was home with his Dad and strange-to-him-then grandmother trying to take care of him. :(

Sending lots of hugs!

My sympathies!

Yep, schools and nurseries are indeed little germ factories.  And it's not just the children who get sick either - even with using antibac gel on my hands after wiping noses I still catch every cold going around at my playgroup.
