Listen to the good British people speak....

I'm also a 'good British person' and I disagree. Or doesn't my opinion count because it doesn't match yours?

Look people...I do not want to get into a political debate...I have not the time nor the patience for it. Just throwing it out there. No need to get all bent out of shape. Can't you guys have a friendly conversation? Agree to disagree. I am not gonna say you're an idiot for believing the way that you do...thats not my place. This is the last that I will say on this subject and not post anything like this again. This really a liberal baised board. I was under the impression that everyone could freely speak....well, maybe trhat right is on it's way out too. THE END

If it's not a topic you wish to discuss, perhaps it would be best in the future to not broach it.

That's such a cop out.  Really.  It has nothing to do with my personal politics or beliefs, but you can't lob a grenade and then get all defensive and pouty when people question/try to inform you of the facts.

Do some research on the case you mentioned.  It took me less than a minute to discover that the "victim" used an illegally-held shotgun to use deadly force on a retreating intruder.  That wouldn't fly in most US states, either.

The second amendment isn't about self-defence.  It's about being able to overthrow a government that has lost the consent of the people to govern (and refuses to relinquish the power through normal means or becomes tyrannical) .  Whether the wisdom in that is sound or not, it's the truth.  I am not an advocate for gun ownership bans, but the UK is a totally different country than the US.

Anyone here is free to campaign for loosening of the gun restriction laws, but I doubt you'd see a change for it.  Not because it would be impossible for you to do so, I just don't think it would have the popular support to have a party invest effort into changing it.  Probably the opposite would happen.

Depends where in the US. As a former resident of New York State, which has pretty strong gun control laws, I get tired of British people portraying all Americans as a bunch of gun-toting NRA supporters who buy assault rifles at Walmart.

As I said, and you quoted, it MIGHT have been ok in the US.

To the OP: The Martin shooting happened in 1999.  Do we really need to go back that far to argue a case that WAS heard by 12 members of his peers.  So you argument that you would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 9 is exactly what happened.

He was judged he went to jail.  If you live in the UK and are confronted by the same situation you too can make the same decision.

It appears to me that these people are freely speaking.  They have simply stated views that disagree with yours.  Free speech gives them this right.

Currently, I am more offended by the man who got a fine for burning a poppy on Rememberance Day.

Speaking of free speech.  I don't agree with his actions, but I feel he should have a right to do so.

QFT.  I am glad I am not the only one that was bothered by this.  I might not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it and all that.

My friend's son was killed in the Dunblane Massacre.  He was five years old and was off at what should have been a normal day of school. You will not find much sentiment for hand gun ownership 'round these parts'.

Everyone however, is allowed to debate all sides of the story, but that's why debates are why they are, not everyone agrees.  As long as it doesn't become personal attacks and remains civil, we can debate away at it.

As I vented to my husband he pointed out they don't have a right to free speech in the UK (as he often reminds me), but since it was not done to incite a riot he doesn't see why he should get a fine.

Wow. I read this as "burning a puppy" and thought "wait, why would you only get a fine for that?!" and "why wouldn't bookgrl be more up in arms about that?".

More caffeine for me, obviously. Or maybe fewer cold meds.

It's a right I'd totally campaign for though, well before the right to bear arms.  The world's not going to come to an end if people are offended, and what fines like these really are supporting is the right to be free from offence, which I don't think is a legitimate right.  This isn't a "PC" vs "non-PC" thing; I think standards like that should be fluid and maintained by society, not the State.  I'd have no problem with individuals, groups, or even the press condemning actions like the burning of poppies.  In fact, I'd probably be among those voices.  It's another to expect the State to punish people for expression even if we find that expression abhorrent.
