Who should I support - football?
« on: June 08, 2011, 07:03:55 PM »
OK so I know this question sounds completely daft. But whenever I am out watching football with my husband and our friends, everyone has a team to support and I don't. I feel left out! I don't want to blindly support my hubby's team (Southampton) and I don't want to just go with a big name team like Man U or something, just because it's a team I've heard of.

But with my scant knowledge of football, it's difficult to get online and "pick" a team to be loyal to. So I want to know, to simplify it, does anyone have any suggestions? Who and why?
In 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important.

DH explained it to me - it's about where you're from and/or who your dad supported.

Which doesn't help any of us, because I'm not from here & my dad supported the NY Yankees.  ;D

Husband is from Norwich & so his team is Norwich City - his dad's team too.

But I'm a Leeds gal through & through because this has been my home for as long as I've lived here & the people of Leeds have been good to me, except the FC has been doing miserably for a long long time now.  :P

Really I don't even care about football, but that's my take on it.  ;)

That's just what I was about to say - people usually either support their local/home team or they support the team that their father/grandfather etc. supports.

I currently work in an office with 6 men and all they ever talk about is football - they all support the local team (even though they aren't all that good) and it's a very personal thing for them, like a lifestyle almost :)!

That’s easy, support Arsenal!  Since the creation of the premier league they are the only team to have not been bumped down to whatever league is beneath them.  Also, the current manager makes a real point of finding out young talent from around the world.  Of course you could argue that only have a few English guys on the team is bad, but let’s not.  Plus, you have got to love Nasri, he’s just so cute!  But he hasn’t resigned his contract yet so I don’t know what’s happening to him.

Or you could go with Everton, but only because the goalie, Tim Howard, is American and very cute.  Plus, he had turrets and his mom had him join a soccer football team to help him get over his shyness.

My BF decided to pick American teams to support awhile ago, at least partly to have something to talk to my dad and grandfather about when he's here visiting. I limited his choices to the general geographic area--ie, NY/NJ/PA/Northeast in general--and he chose based on whose uniforms he liked best. So there's that method. He ended up chosing the NY Yankees (makes my dad happy, but my grandfather is a Mets fan and my brother is a rebel Red Sox fan, despite being from NJ and living in SoCal), the Devils and the Knicks, I believe. He refuses to support an American football team, though.

I'm not into football at all, so (just for a laugh) I tend to support whoever happens to be playing against my husband's favorite team, which is Liverpool.  He is also really into Gaelic football and hurling (he supports Dublin for both) so I root for the other team lol. I've probably been a fan for a day of each of the other 31 counties at least once. He knows I'm not serious about it, so it's all just a bit of fun.   :)

Where are you moving to?  Some places, like Glasgow, are best to just keep your head down and not pick anyone.   :(

This! This! BF is a Rangers supporter, for the exact same reasons others have listed.  His family has always been that way, and that's who his son supports as well.  If I ever bothered to like competitive sports, I'd stay well away from either Rangers or Celtic!  I'd probably choose someone like Aberdeen or Motherwell, or Partick Thistle.  :P

In my youth I was a bit of a Gers fan, mainly due to my friend and her family.  See how that happens?

Now I am happy to admit I find football boring.

Do you like football at all? If it's just because you feel left out, don't sweat it. You don't need to like or follow football to live in the UK! DH and I couldn't have less interest if we tried. I doubt he could even name a team.

However, if you genuinely enjoy watching, then ignore me.  :P ;) ;D

Eh? The Premier League was formed in 1992, amongst others - Spurs, Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd, Chelsea have not been relegated in that time.

Arsenal have been in the top division since 1919 (Everton are the only team never to have been relegated form the top division I believe) when they had finished below my team, Barnsley in the 2nd division and yet they were given a place (when the top division was being expanded) in the top division over teams that had finished above them. They effectively bought their place in the top division. Don't get me wrong - I like to watch them as they play good football, I lso like Man Utd.

If chosing a team then the most logical thing is to go with your local side or your husbands team if he goes to games and you'd like to go.
However DW has somehow linked up to Spurs just because she liked the way they played and she likes the manager. Of course she also likes Barnsley.

Sorry TykeMan, I'm gonna have to stick with what DF told me about Arsenal!

My fiance likes supporting the foreign teams with the stupidest/strangest names. ;)

Like it has been said before, most people support the team theur family supported historically. Of course, there are plenty of glory hunters out there. ;)

But what you're sticking to is wrong.  Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa (I think) have always been in the Premier League.

I think what you are trying to say your DF said is that Arsenal is the only team to have never been relegated from any top tier league , but this is actually wrong too because as Woolwich Arsenal (the same team) they were relegated from the top division in 1913.

And please OP, for the love of God, do not support a team because the players are cute.   I've chosen my own teams b/c like Tykeman's wife, I just like the way the play or I like a certain player (and I always cheer against Man U).  Just keep watching and you'll find something you like.

Still not wavering.  Sorry.

I've always liked football, I spent 10 years playing goalie and made the all star team for my region several times when I was younger.  I've never had a professional team in the US that I've really supported, except for the Baltimore Blast (now Spirit) and that's indoor, so not really the same.

I support Arsenal for several reasons, but largely because that's DF's team.  You've complete missed my love of Tim Howard, who yes, happens to be attractive, but my main interest in him is how he overcame a disease (is turrets a condition more than a disease) to play a sport he loves in one of the top leagues in the world.  Also, Nasri is a cutie as well, but he also really gives every game his all and (at least in my perception) has a really good attitude about it all.  Even though Fabragas is considered to be the best on the team, I don’t like his attitude, I think he comes across as rather whinny.  Did you see the game where Nasri took on to the head, got a massive bump, but kept playing?  Gotta respect someone that dedicated.
