Maple Syrup
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:05:34 PM »
When I visit my fiancée next month in PA, she's sending me home with a huge bottle of maple syrup :)  She was shocked when she visited as we went to Tesco and there were only two options when it came to maple syrup - both bottles were very small and waaay overpriced compared to what she pays!

And horrible stuff too! I made the mistake of buying what I thought would be maple syrup like I had back home.  It certainly isn't Aunt Jemima!  I binned it quick quickly!

I find really gorgeous proper real maple syrup here! I don't buy it often (we don't eat a lot of things that need it) so I can't remember the price, but there's definitely nothing horrible about it!  :)

I only buy real maple syrup at home and I find it hard to get the grade I want in the UK.

Usually, all they have is A Fancy.  I really want Grade A dark Amber.

Plus, it is really expensive here.

Might be a matter of palette as Aunt Jemima isn't Maple Syrup it's flavoured HFCS - INGREDIENTS: CORN SYRUP, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, WATER, CELLULOSE GUM, CARAMEL COLOR, SALT, SODIUM BENZOATE AND SORBIC ACID (PRESERVATIVES), ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL FLAVORS, SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE.

I don't eat HFCS so give me the "horrible" stuff you get in the UK any day!

DW brought some from one of our trips a couple of years ago and it was the Lite version....we still have about half left so fortunately I guess we really rarely use it other than on pancake day, and the one time she was craving Ameircan pancakes so I made some for Sunday breakfast.

If youre looking for pancake syrup (Aunt Jemima, Log Cabin, etc), larger Tesco sells Goldens Maple Syrup flavour and its like for like.. £2 for a bottle (I think) I think its in either the section where they sell ice cream cones and toppings or in baking. They move it about...Its not cheap, but works out cheaper then buying it from an importer.

I actually discovered this existed while living in Dublin. We used to go the Metro off St Stephens Green and would be able to get an American-style breakfast. They kept bottles of the stuff on the table.. Yummy.

Adding my two cents in- I definitely agree with you. I wouldn't touch that stuff. When I used to live in the US, much of my paycheck went towards avoiding food products with all of that horrible stuff... I can't buy food without ever looking at the ingredients.

I love Metro Cafe!  :D  I'm also a big fan of the Maple-flavoured Lyle's stuff. I only like fake maple syrup.  :P  We only eat syrup-related breakfasts rarely, so if that's the only thing we have with HFCS I'll let it go. My parents eat the Lite stuff and it's vile.

I think the locals refer to one of Dublins best hidden secrets.. We found it getting lost one of the first Sunday mornings we were there and then went pretty much twice a month there after after. I miss it greatly.

I've only found the little bottle that's really expensive too, and it doesn't even taste nearly as good as Mrs. Butterworths or Aunt Jemima. My mom was going to ship me a bottle from the States, but the post office advised her not to ship anything liquid like that as the bottle could expand in the cold temperatures while in transit and explode and cause a huge mess. I wish there was another way to get some proper syrup here, but unfortunately I guess no one cares about maple syrup here.

I brought a big bottle of Mrs. Butterworths back with me when I last visited my family in the US.  I portion it out very carefully!

Costco does. It's £10 a bottle.

Can you get molasses here?  My husband's grandmother makes her own syrup for the kids when they visit and molasses was the only ingredient that you might not normally have handy.  My kids love pancakes and french toast, so I am hoping to be able to make syrup "just like Grandma".

There's a difference between maple syrup and 'pancake syrup.' Maple syrup is real and is easily available in the UK. But, because people here don't really eat American style pancakes, you probably won't find the pancake syrup you're looking for.
