I HATE WASHING DISHES! so much...am I crazy?
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:08:04 AM »
It's only been a week, and although I love everything else about my life here in the UK, the one thing I can't stand is not having a dishwasher! My husband helps when he can but he works and I don't, so it's only fair that I do some semblance of housework. But I literally dread dishwashing.

I hate the smell of day-old dishes, the old food residue, the fact that there's NO GARBAGE DISPOSAL so I have to fish all the food bits out of the drain trap and it's so gross. I wear big marigold gloves but it still disgusts me. Not to mention my husband cooks a lot from scratch using chopped tomatoes and cheese, which is the worst to clean up by hand.

I know I shouldn't complain, it's a small price to pay for having such a happy life over here and a great family, but UGHHHH I think I have some kind of disorder...dishes are the bane of my life! Does anyone else hate it as much as I do?
In 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important.

You can get a garbage disposal installed - http://www.insinkerator.co.uk/aboutfwd/what-is-a-disposer.aspx

I was adamant that I would get one within weeks of moving (eventhough we have a dishwasher), but never got around to it and now dont think of it much, but if the clumps of food are mostly what you hate, it sounds like it would be worth it.

We have a dishwasher, but I still wash up pots and pans every night. Honestly, I don't really mind it. If I had to do dishes, knives & forks, etc. as well, it might annoy me, though. We don't have a disposal either, but I scrape the dishes clean into the bin before putting them in the dishwasher. I don't think there'd be much to fish out if I had to wash them in the sink.

When I wash up, I slather on really thick hand cream, then put on my Marigolds, and use scalding hot water. By the time I'm finished, my hands are incredibly soft! Maybe you could think of it as a pre-manicure treatment?  ;)

I dont mind doing dishes, but after 3 years of having to do them all the time we finally got a dishwasher. It did become a chore and a point of bickering between the two of us. The dishwasher is a lifesaver! Its been a year since we bought it and I still do some dishes by hand (our frying pan isnt dishwasher friendly  :\\\'( )but if it can go in there, it does go in there.  Now all we bicker about is how things are placed in the dishwasher instead of whose doing them...

We never have large chinks of food stuck to our plates though.. I always scrap clear into the bin when done eating and try to rinse (especially stainy/sticky things like spaghetti sauce and the stir frys) before putting in the sink... Am I an oddity for doing so?

Have you looked into a counter top style/compact dishwasher? They wont take the pots and the pans, but will the plates, cups and cutlery... Argos have them starting at £140 - not cheap, but cheaper than remodelling a kitchen..

I don't mind dish washing... My pet peeve is taking out the garbage.  I would love to get a dishwasher, would save me a lot of time. Especially when this new baby arrives. Maybe when we get our new place I can convince the hubby his life would be supremely better with one!! :D
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

We have a dishwasher but we also choose to wash by hand. Saves on water I think, and there's just two of us so we don't use a ton of dishes. The best thing to do is rinse the fresh food off before it gets hard. Then when it comes time to doing dishes, you don't have the smell and you're not having to scrape off the crust of the day. Lol.
There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?

Doing the dishes is pretty much the only thing DB and I ever bicker about.  I hate it. So does he.  They get done eventually (but mostly by me). He doesnt like doing the small things--tupperware, silverware, glasses, or cooking utensils.  So I do all that, but by then I've already done mostly everything, so I do the plates, and leave the big pots and pans for him.

But I absolutely hate it.  We're moving at the end of the week, (and I let him pick the place).  The first thing I asked was whether it has a dishwasher or not (it doesn't.)  But, for £140, I might have to get one!

I lived in 2 very cute and quaint apartments in the US without a dishwasher or garbage disposal and I never really minded, so I suppose I was used to it before I moved over.

Doing dishes isn't my favorite thing, but I always put on a good podcast like This American Life or Talk of the Nation and I just consider it my zen listening time.

thank you! I have added this to me "all I want list" for the new house.  I will have a dishwasher and a garbage disposal because with 4 of us at any given time its a huge PIA.  DH doesnt mind doing dishes at all but I prefer the dishwasher and as they say "happy wife, happy life" ;-)

Our dishwasher saved my marriage.   ;)

I hated waking up in the morning to a sinkful of dishes, although it is/was my husband's job to do them and he usually did.

I didn't mind it in the US, probably because it was just me, but with two people.  No way.

There is much debate about the handwashing vs machine washing dishes.  In general, if you fill up the dishwasher it is more efficient to machine wash.

I never had a dishwasher growing up and our garbage disposal caused so many plumber call-outs that my parents had it removed when I was in my early teens, so I guess I don't really get the despair of not having these things!

We didn't have a disposal either and I have never seen the point.  But a dishwasher saves time and effort and hands.

I guess I could still use a carpet brush too, my grandparents had one, but I prefer a vacuum.
