Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson

It's about some American divers who discover a German U-boat that sank off the coast of New Jersey and everything they went through to discover the identity of the mystery boat. My initial thought when my friend recommended it was, "Hmmm, submarines" but WOW, was it amazing. Monday I missed my train stop on the way to and from work (each way!!) because I was so enthralled with it. I highly recommend it!

I'm stuck reading Poe and Hawthorne for a Lit class here in the States, but looking forward to some trashy read about the monarchy when I come overseas.  (something remotely truthful, but scandalous!)  any suggestions?

Hello and welcome!

My two cents if you want something trashy is to read a book about the late Princess Diana (e.g., one by Andrew Morton) as that will have a lot of information about other royals as well.

Strictly speaking, if you want to read about the monarchy, David Starkey is your best bet, but I don't think anyone would call him trashy.  He is a well respected and widely read historian and a few of his books have been serialised on television.  Starkey does include all the salient details of scandal and such (with delicious zest!), so you might find his books of interest, suppose it really depends on what you mean by wanting to read something "trashy".

Let us know what you choose!  ;D

Sniff Sniff..... just finished....

P.S. I Love You
by
Cecelia Ahern

Just read imdb.com about the movie and it looks like they departed quite a bit from the book.

Anyone see the movie? What are your thoughts?

Waiting for my friend to read it so we can watch the film together.
I made it!!

Don't watch the movie.  Seriously, movies are never as good, but this was awful.  I adored the book, but it literally took me three tries to finish the movie.  They changed or omitted everything good about it, and my boyfriend didn't understand what was going on at all because it was so hard to follow and he hadn't read the book.

But.  You really must read  Love, Rosie (which is also called Where Rainbows End), it's equally tear-jerking and wonderful!

I'm trying to revisit some classics and am halfway through To Kill a Mockingbird - last read about 35 years ago under duress in an English class.

I'm rereading Wives & Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell (the BBC version was on telly last week which I hadnt seen in a long time). The stepmother in it is such a vile character; I get all worked up just reading it.

And just to be unusual, i've borrowed the latest Chris Moyles autobio/ghosted book from my library.

i love dean koontz... odd thomas was great, but not my favorite of his... i liked fear nothing and seize the night... you should definitely read those two if you haven't yet...

has anyone read anything by mark haddon?  i read the curious incident of the dog in the night-time and a spot of bother... both of them were fantastic...
as for me, i am still reading american fiction (american renaissance period) for class... we are studying walt whitman, who just wants to get it on with everyone!  LOL... makes for interesting class discussions, though!  :)

can't wait until i am finally relaxing in my new home in 19 days, then i can catch up on more current literature while i am taking a break before looking for work... i just did one year's worth of grad school in 6 months!!!  urgh... but its almost over now... last day of class on thursday... WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!  you would think i would be sick of reading by now, but i just can't wait to CHOOSE what to read... :)
