I am obsessed with them! When I was reading them, I just could not put them down.

Good sign! I also wonder about the video game that is coming out soon.....  :)

Thinking about getting these. Thoughts?  :)

I'm only about 100 pages into A Game of Thrones and I am pretty sucked in. :) I watched the first season of the series, though, so sadly I already know what happens for the most part. I think the firsy season stuck pretty close to the storyline of the book. Really looking forward to reading ahead before watching the second season.

Liked the Millenium Trilogy a lot and the Swedish films were great. I have no intention of seeing the American versions, though. I can't imagine they would compare at all. Do they even take place in Sweden or did they try to Americanize the whole story?   :-\\\\

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle. I've never read any Sherlock Holmes and thought I probably should give it a go; so far it's wonderful! It's just a shame the book weighs about 20lbs ... still, it's a gorgeous leather bound volume with marbled endpapers and gilt lettering so it's a pure joy to read.

I have got the complete annotated canon...it is huge

/currently reading Fruits Basket, daughter got me hooked.

The Fire by Katharine Neville, the sequel to The Eight, which I read years ago. I don't remember any of the details from the first book so it's kind of confusing and I hope it gets better.

The American version (they've only made the first one so far), was filmed in Sweden and they tried to make it as authentic as possible. Both Robin Wright (Erica Berger) and Rooney Mara (Lisbeth) used Swedish accents and the majority of the cast were Swedish. They had asked Noomi Rapace to reprise her role as Lisbeth, but she decided not to since she didn't want to play the same character in the same story again.

My thoughts on the American version were that it was pretty good - the storytelling was a bit tighter and the overall feel of the film was slicker, but ultimately, I still like the Swedish version better and I prefer Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth.

My apologizes, Chary, for not responding sooner to your question about Elizabeth George's latest book Believing the Lie.  I agree with you - not her best, but I am hopeful that the next one will be better.  I thought the way Believing the Lie ended set up some interesting possibilities for the next book.

I've read P.D. James Innocent Blood and am now reading A Test of Wills by Charles Todd.

Loved the Millennium series and the Swedish movies.

We saw a bit of the Swedish version online and couldn't get past the fact that they sounded like the Swedish Chef!  ;D

I'm reading Matthew Pearl's The last Dickens which is pretty good and he seems to have researched the period thoroughly -- at least the Boston part. I do get annoyed with the emancipated woman scenario, where the heroine from historical periods when women were denied much freedom is a women's libber, gadding about and standing up for herself. I'm sure it must have happened but a lot of fiction makes it seem a common situation.

Anyone read The expats by Chris Pavone? I've read an excerpt and it definitely struck a chord: woman at an airport with piles of luggage realizing she's an immigrant!

I'm reading non-fiction at the moment. The Non-Toxic Avenger by Deanna Duke is the story of a woman whose son was diagnosed with autism the same week her health nut husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Since both are linked with environmental toxins, she goes on a mission to look at their family's exposure. Not finished yet but fascinating stuff!

I've recently read The Tiger in the Smoke by Margery Allingham, The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd (highly recommended!) and Wait for Me! (Deborah Devonshire's autobiography). And now I'm reading Encyclopedia of Snow by Sarah Emily Miano and The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe.

Thinking about getting these. Thoughts?  :)

Concur with all those who have commented on this. Totally sucked in. I'm on Book 2, Clash of Kings, and I'm racing through it.

I'll be honest, the only thing I dislike is the constant name dropping. I feel like Martin can go on and on, paragraph after paragraph of just names of people who are in a room, and every time he gives a name he has to list their house, where they live, what their seal is and who their fathers are and so on and so forth. My least favourite thing about fantasy books are the names as I end up getting stuck trying to figure out how to pronounce them. It's an OCD thing, I think, being a writer and needing to completely understand the words someone else has written. I've gotten around that in book 2 by just glancing over these sections. I feel like they are just filler until the main event.

We watched the first episode of that last night.  It was basically an X-rated Lord of the Rings and I didn't like it.  The book may be different?
