Catherine the Great by Robert K. Massie.  Excellent - so readable.

The Luminaries. It's amazing.

This Is How It Ends, by Kathleen Macmahon

Saw it in Britwit's post about the London Book Club.
I won't be at the meeting, but I am really enjoying the book!  :D

Given that those of us who post in this thread are generally fairly literate people, I wonder if we could request a change of title. 'What ya reading' makes my skin crawl every time I see it. How about 'What are you reading?'?

Anyway, having got that off my chest, I've been reading some good stuff lately, though most of it has been re-reads (for book group). First was Good Behaviour by Molly Keane, then The Victorian Chaise-Longue by Marghanita Laski. Then a couple of new ones for me, The Colour of Milk by Nell Leyshon and now The Setons by O. Douglas. The Setons is part of a WWI anniversary reading challenge I'm taking part in. Next up is a re-read of The Crowded Street by Winifred Holtby.

Chary, I notice in an earlier post you made a positive comment about The Luminaries, but if I remember on Facebook or Goodreads (can't recall which) I thought I remember you saying it was disappointing?  I've just put it on my kindle.  Did you enjoy it in the end?

I liked it at first, but in the end not really. There were too many characters, all male, and very little character development so I completely lost track of who was whom. It was too long by several hundred pages - where was the editor?? The whole astronomy/luminary bit was an unnecessary gimmick.

Sorry. I know others who loved it, so you might like it!

The Hunger Games trilogy. I just really felt like I was missing out on something!

While I've edited the title of the original post, it doesn't edit the rest of the existing post titles. It does however change the title in the replies. Hope that helps. :)

We, The Drowned by Carsten Jensen. Two hundred pages in and I am in love with it. Not sure where it will go!

After wading through too many overly long books which needed editing, I've now been reading some really good shorter ones this year. At the moment I'm in the middle of Alice Munro's 'Dear Life' short story collection. It's so refreshing not to be faced with 800 unnecessary pages of words. Editors! We need editors!

The Calligrapher's Secret. It's slow going but was given to me by a friend and I know she will ask me about it so I am slogging on.  :-\\\\

Thinking of buying 'Hands Free Mama: A Guide to Putting Down the Phone, Burning the To-Do List, and Letting Go of Perfection to Grasp What Really Matters!' by Rachel Macy Stafford. It sounds up my street since I'm guilty of some of these things  ::)

Started Just One Evil Act by Elizabeth George almost 2 weeks ago. I have found the first 100 or so pages very hard going, usually I get into her books and can't put them down and would be done with it by now.
This one, I keep waiting for it to 'pull me in', so far, nothing  :(
Since I head back to the UK tomorrow, it goes back to the library today and I will take it out again from my UK library and try it again when I get back :)
