Could Ranch be the New Ketchup?
« on: April 11, 2012, 02:57:00 AM »
I thought the folks here could appreciate this. I like the occasional ranch when I'm out in a restaurant, but don't I buy it for home and maybe eat it a couple of times a year, so I'm really not fussed by it. However, I know we've got our little Hidden Valley elves that bring it back over to the UK with them.  ;) It appears Hidden Valley is releasing a thicker Ranch in a squeeze bottle, and advertising it as "for everything".

The new ketchup my ars*!  ;)
Ketchup can't compare to Ranch!

I have always used Ranch for everything and never, ever eat ketchup unless it's just a couple of drops to mix in with mayo for battered fish, because battered fish is the one area where I don't think Ranch really works for me.

Like the idea of a thicker Ranch.... I make mine up with packets, instead of buying the bottles, so I always do make it a bit thicker.

I heart Ranch and it's really the one 'American thing' I have never ever been able to give up!  I get my lovely pals to bring it back for me when they visit the US, I buy it on eBay when necessary, and have even paid extortionate prices for it in import shops.

Oh most definitely if you ask my daughter. She's going nuts now as it never occurred to me that the UK wouldn't have ranch dressing. I told her I would get her grandmother to send some over when she sends her next package. My daughter loves it on just about everything.

Yeah, I'm with BG.  Blue cheese (homemade usually)>Ranch.  I do remember before I left the States they had a Salsa/Ranch combo dressing which was pretty good though.

To me, Ranch is up there with Peeps, Cheez-Whiz, Miracle Whip, Cool Whip, etc. - American products whose appeal I have never and will never understand. Vile.

Mm, from scratch it is wonderful. I still bring home Kraft and Hidden Valley bottles each visit. I used to use it like ketchup, but I don't use it as often now (maybe because of the shortage of supply). I still love it though!

I almost went into a depression when I learned our local Sam's wasn't carrying the 16 oz bottles of the powder mix- buying those little packets would have cost me a fortune!!  We did find it in the larger bottle thank goodness - crisis averted ;D  We used to mix it up a little thicker but now just seem to use it as a seasoning on potatoes, fish, burgers rather than making the dip.

To each their own right

This.

Well, almost this. I agree everything on the list, after Ranch, is vile. Ranch dressing, to me, is just okay. I don't hate it, but I never really understood the urge to put it on everything. I've tried it on just about everything, because there's always some friend or another who says I "simply must," so I can say I'm not knocking it without trying it. For me, in every instance, there are better options. :)

I only like Miracle Whip (hwa-ip) on sandwiches, tomato sandwiches to be precise.  I never liked it until I went on this camping trip, and it was all we had.  I was so ill during that trip, but for some reason MW sammiches and Lipton mushroom rice were the two things I could eat.

I don't like brown sauce or Cool Whip, but I'd never begrudge anyone their weird food.  Cheez-Whiz was munchy food.  I can't imagine eating it in any other context in any significant amount without loads of self-loathing.  I hate Velveeta because I've eaten actual government cheese and I don't care what people say, it is the same crap.  Or close enough to ruin any enjoyment of anything that is obviously made with it.  My dad has a recipe he's passed down which uses ingredients like Velveeta/government cheese which is awesome, but that's mainly because it's made of tons of things that are bad for you, and Dad's night cooking dinner was such a great memory.

BTW, if you serve ranch with your wings you are committing a huge sacrilege.

Blue Cheese maybe though........  ;)

I haven't had blue cheese dressing in years, but when I was a kid I would put it on EVERYTHING. Steak, chicken, fries. I think I must have burnt myself out on it, but now I kind of want to make some!  :)

Basically the only time I eat ranch dressing is when I get a salad at a steakhouse. I don't know what it is about those salads, but they're just delicious with ranch. I thought I'd really miss it when I moved to the UK and brought some packets with me, but they just sat in the cupboard unused. I like ranch, and I like my fries dipped in it and everything, but I would never think to order it. I'm no fan of ketchup, so anything can happily take its place! Brown sauce is too sweet for me. I like to dip my fries in mayo!
