Excellent BBQ Restaurant
« on: October 04, 2012, 03:36:37 PM »
Hey Everyone

I'm a Yank in Manchester over from California, but I was originally raised in the south and lived there for 20 years before heading west. I like to think I know good BBQ - I've got a family that basically lives off of it back home.

Anyway, it's hard to find good BBQ in the States let alone England. But my partner and I came across a place called Hickory's Smokehouse in Chester. This place is the real deal. My partner and I had the burnt ends appetizer, brisket (which came to us tender and with great smoke rings) and a few of their sides and it was delicious. The sauce was sweeter, but not too sweet. Really done right.

Just thought I'd share.  :)

We saw that place whilst walking the walls in Chester a couple of years ago and I pointed it out to DW.

Good to know- We did a Manchester meet-up not too long ago on a FB Yankee Women in the UK I'm on.  Dined at another BBQ place that caused me to be a bit sick for the rest of the night  :(  Next time we meet up I'll request that place.
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

Jenna-- Thanks for recommending Hickory's.  My husband and I visited Chester yesterday and made our way to Hickory's for lunch.  It was very tasty!  I really enjoyed the pulled pork was particularly impressed with the house-made sauce.

Thanks for passing this find along to others; I'm already thinking about my next visit.  :)

Just looking at their website and looks like they've opened another in West Kirby, Merseyside.

Oh great! Hopefully they'll expand to all corners of the UK. No one who likes it should ever be too far from good BBQ.

OK....going to post this here as I can't find where it was originally posted (I thought it was here)
As a result of me commenting Mrs Robinson posted (or send me a PM but I can't find it) about a place in Leeds and it looked really good.

Was it called The Rib Shakk?

So wonder if you've seen this

It's closing down! Great shame!

That's good to know -  the best BBQ I've found in Derby is TGI Friday! Lol

Chester isn't too far from me, and that sounds worth the drive.

No, that's not the one - but I am surprised because the whole Anthony's 'empire' was a big deal in Leeds dining for quite awhile. However, that said, I never really had the inclination to go to the flagship - Anthony's - which associated itself with that Blumenthal-like trend 'molecular gastronomy' - because I didn't fancy paying £100 for some kind of flavoured 'air' or 'foam'.  ;) :P  I mean - we are in Yorkshire here - God's Own County & we got pretty good air for FREE here.  :D

We also have amazing BBQ now at:

Red's True BBQ

Also, I did go to another BBQ place in Manchester within the past year - called Southern 11. And Reds here in Leeds is better than Southern 11 was by a country mile!  Plus if you really want one - you can get a donut burger at Reds!  ;D  But it's not my sort of thing - I recommend the pulled pork, brisket or ribs.
