Candy Canes!
« on: December 07, 2012, 06:09:57 PM »
I desperately wanted to make peppermint bark today, but alas, cannot find candy canes anywhere!  Anybody know where I can buy a pack of either candy canes, or those little round mints with the red lines on them?

I've only seen them in the Whittard tea shop, where they sell 1 with a mug or something...So I know they exist, but WHERE?!

Edited to add:  I have seen them advertised online at Tesco, Poundland, and Tiger, and will continue to look, but I can't actually find them in-store anywhere (Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury's Poundland, Tiger, RobertDyas, TK Maxx...)

Sorry I can't help with finding them, but do be careful with the red striped candy canes.  They're not necessarily peppermint!  In fact, I don't think I've ever seen peppermint candy canes here.  Once I thought I had one, but it turned out to be strawberry  [smiley=bleck.gif]

I saw candy canes in Poundland about a week ago. I assumed they were peppermint, but after what Historyenne said, I can't be certain.

They can be found, but you have to look around a bunch.  I bought a bunch last year and also made peppermint bark.

I bought these for our work xmas tree, definitely peppermint, great for stirring into hot chocolate!

Cant remember if it was Aldi or Lidl, but I saw peppermint and 'tropical fruit' candy canes.

Is there anything else with peppermint flavour you could use?

I used to get them from BHS or Works, but sometimes the peppermint wasn't a true peppermint.

Thanks CB and TamaMoo, I'll try John Lewis/BHS tomorrow.  Was planning to avoid Oxford Street on the weekends this month, but I guess I'll have to make an exception :)

Tracey--Peppermint Bark  OR, if you want to get real fancy, you can use a silicone mold to make cute shaped peppermint bark!  (I'm a big fan of this!)

And yes, you can use other peppermint stuff, but this is festive and pretty (which is one of the main reasons I wanted to make it).  Normally you would add peppermint extract to the chocolate too, but a) I can't find that either, and b) I bought some nice dark chocolate with mint so figured that will do...

I found proper peppermint ones at Debenham's. First batch of bark made and eaten already LOL.

Oh wow... thanks for the link to the Bark... that looks lovely!
I can see why you actually do need the stripey candy now, rather than just peppermint flavouring.

I'm going to the German Christmas market today, and am going to have a look for some peppermint canes...

That's odd.  I've had no problem finding peppermint oil in the regular grocery stores.

Could be that the biggest shops I go to are "Metro" or "Local" versions, probably.

Ah, I see.  I go by "Extra" ones on my way to work, so I do most of my shopping there.

I got mine at the pound store. I'm going to use it to make peppermint bark too. It'll be my first time to make it, so fingers crossed it works!
