all washed down with Newcastle Brown Ale, Guinness and other British beers!!

America even has a fish & chip chain restaurant called Long John Silvers, albeit prepared slightly different and serving such things as chicken "planks", shrimp, clams and crab cakes!! Damn!! I could murder a Long John Silvers right now!!

So, why cant everything be reciprocal and we have American food joints here??

Don't we already have lots of American food joints? McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, TGI Fridays etc. What you list are American companies and restaurants doing British themed menus rather that British companies moving there.

Oh and since when was Guinness a "British beer"?

I just don't think there is a filter coffee drinking culture(?) here.  People seem to drink fancier drinks or, like everyone at every office I have worked at, instant.

I'm a Brit and prefer filter coffee. Anyway I mentioned to DW about Dunkin coming here and she said she'd be far more excited if Wawa were coming over!

Nope, would be perfectly happy never to see another Dunkin.  Hardly ever went there except when my father was in the nursing home and we brought him a box of 'holes'.  Used to go to Panera or Starbucks, if only a chain coffee shop available. I dislike coffee served in cardboard and prefer to go somewhere that offers actual mugs where you can sit down and relax.  (Hooray for Headingley's "Bowery"  :-*)

Exactly.
Long John Silver's was around when i was a kid in the 70's... along with another similar abomination called 'Chesley Fipps Fish & Chips', which is just another US restaurant with a vaguely 'British'-style menu.  ::)

Starbucks does have actual mugs if you prefer to sit down and relax.

Yeah, but we could do with more American restaurants here!! I keep petitioning on Buffalo Wild Wings Official Facebook page for them to come over here to the UK!! They would make a killing here!! Even the buffalo chicken wings served in TGI Fridays here are too mild for me!! The wings served at Buffalo Wild Wings kicks some serious ass for me!!

We could also do with more authentic Mexican restaurants here too!! There are Mexican restaurants here, but, by and large, British people havent got a flying clue about Mexican food!! To British people as long as its some stew or something with chilli powder thrown in, or wrapped in a tortilla under the guise of an enchilada, then its Mexican food!! Down here in Bournemouth theres a Mexican Restaurant here called Coriander, and one of their lunchtime meals is something called Chicken Vesuvius, which is a chicken hash or something and piled high with sliced potato and cheese and then put under the grill. Its just a chicken hash with some chilli powder thrown in for good measure, but the thing is its named after an Italian volcano!! The last I checked on a world atlas Italy wasnt anywhere near Mexico!!! ;D ;D

Havent got a clue!! ;D ;D :o :o

In your opinion. You keep saying these things as if they're fact.

I'd like a nice Mexican restaurant too, but not a big chain and not an American company, tyvm.

As for why the Mexican restaurants in the UK don't taste authentic to you, well, I think you answered your own question. Check a world atlas. Mexico is nowhere near the UK either and there are very few people of Mexican origin living here. Why would we be familiar with those flavours??

Well, the UK is nowhere near China, Japan or India, either, but its saturation point regarding all those restaurants here!!

About 3 or 4 weeks ago I went to a yearly festival held down here in Dorset called The Great Dorset Chilli Festival, and as soon as you entered the grounds you felt like you were teleported to Mexico!! There was Mexican and Latino food stands, Mexican and Caribbean entertainment(even a Mariachi Band who flew in from Mexico for the event), cooking demos, advice on how to grow your own chilli plants, you name it!!

We could do with far less in my opinion!

Don't mind American food at all, but we don't need chains.

But we have significant populations of people of those nationalities living here.

No offense to anyone's love of Mexican (I'm right there with you) but I'd just like to point out that Mexican food served in the US is generally not true Mexican food.  It's a version of Mexican food that appeals to it's audience.  Just like the Mexican (or 'Mexican') food served in the UK is intended for a different audience here.

Well, the UK is nowhere near China, Japan or India, either, but its saturation point regarding all those restaurants here!!

If you mean the UK is saturated with Chinese, Japanese and Indian people which causes the food from those countries to be more popular here, then (as chary said) it totally makes sense for there to be not many Mexican restaurants in the UK (at least not like Americans are used to)- I've not met one Mexican living here.   :-\\\\  I've met a few travelling around Europe, but not living permanently in the UK.

I think you missed TykeMan's sarcasm.  Guinness is and always has been Irish.   ::)

I just think the world is not improved by homogeneity. If I'm travelling to different countries, I want to see different cultures, different foods, different ... everything!
