But is the area you live in typical? This is not directed to your comments or you but in reading this thread (and stories in the media in general) I find assumptions are made about what is typical in the US and the UK and I just don't see the differences myself.

Honestly, I don't know if it's typical. My guess would be that it's probably typical for an area that's not in a major city, but again that's just a guess. I'm just basing my views on my own experiences.
