Driving Instructor Recommendations - Sheffield
« on: October 20, 2013, 07:42:54 PM »
Hello everyone!

I just got a promotion at work and I need to have my theory (at the very least) passed in 6 months time.

I've scoured the internet to find the best deals, but I always like word of mouth recommendations as well.

Can anyone recommend any fabulous driving instructors in Sheffield? I may look at doing an intensive driving course or the bog standard lessons. Not sure as of yet.

Thanks in advance!  ;D

Ta!
That's really helpful!

Now I just hope people will pop along and let me know who they've used and if they've liked them!

I took driving lessons this summer (and passed my tests first time around). I took them in London, so I can't help you out with specific instructors, but I will suggest you shop around. Try out a few instructors and go with the one you feel the most confident with. DH is always surprised when his friends and coworkers say they don't like their instructor yet they keep giving them money for lessons.  ::)

I had one lesson with an instructor who hadn't even thought of the fact I'd be on the opposite side of the car and the opposite side of road.  ::) I only had the one lesson with her and tried out another instructor who was much more experienced with international drivers. A much better fit for me.

Shop around and remember just because an instructor worked for someone else doesn't mean they'll work for you.  ;)

I completely agree with TF.

A colleague highly recommended her instructor to me, but I hated him. He may have been good for a complete novice, but he was not my cup of tea.

I then had trial lessons with 2 other people before choosing one and ended up with a fantastic experience. (Passed the first time too!)

Good luck! :)

Thank you very much, ladies! I do appreciate it!

I'll have to do a little more research and see what I can come up with. Still trying to decide if I want to go with a large company or a smaller private one.

Theres a huge thread here:
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=838604
That you can search through.. (last pages are most relevant)

The most recent posts for an automatic, female instructor called Michelle is no longer relevant as shes no longer giving lessons in Sheffield. I was using her for the last few weeks and shes now pregnant and cant drive this far out anymore. :/

She works as part of Go For It Driving School - who cater to both automatic and manual lessons

I'm now going to start my lessons with Pete on thursday and can let you know how that goes

Will do and good luck with finding someone!
The only tip i have for Sheffield is dont do your test in city centre. Try for hillsborough, apparently thats the easiest in the area. If your instructor will do it, apparently Rotherhams exam is easy as well.

I live in Hillsborough  ;D I like that they will come to you - that will be nice for after work. I may give them a call at the weekend after you let me know how Pete works out.  :) I was booked in with RED, but had to cancel and they are very, very pushy. I like the offers that Go For It has on at the moment!  ;D

Yeah, RED is a franchise, so they might be under pressure to get people, and get them blocked in. Go For It is totally independant..

I'm doing automatic lessons, so if thats what you're also planning to do will totally let you know how it goes.

I *think* theyre doing referrals, so if so mention my name (Kerri, another American, and I'm in the Meersbrook area) which should get you a discount.

Oooooh for my Theory test (the questions bit, not the driving) I'm using this app on my Android tablet and can recommend wholeheartedly.

Ooh, thanks for that Kerri!
I have to go for the manual - I'll need to drive my boss's car eventually. I'm scared though - haha, not only will I be on the opposite side of the road, but now I have to worry about a stick shift as well.  :o I drove for 10 years in the States in automatics - this will be a HUGE shift for me!
I'll have a look at that app as well - thanks, you've been a great help!
I do like the look of their website and they seem like they'll be really helpful in order to get me prepared for the tests!  ;D

Anytime!!
My friend tried to teach me manual, and I just couldnt grasp it all, despite Sarahs patience with me. I'm hoping once I have passed the automatic test to go back and learn manual.

I will admit its not easy, but once you find the right instructor you'll be on your way. Maybe you can convince your boss to get one of those dual control cars that can bounce between manual and auto.. ;)

They seem to be a pretty decent school and another instructor from that SF thread said they recommend GFI for their auto lessons, so if other schools are sending them business, I'd say they know what theyre doing.

When I was working, I was with another school (had to stop lessons due to family issues) and they would pick me up from work.

What was the other school that you were with?
