What's on your Christmas menu this year?
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:43:23 AM »
I'm off to J's parents for the usual turkey and trimmings, etc- and they usually do another roast dinner on Boxing Day. But Christmas Eve is mine!
I'm working that day, so can't go too in depth on my meal craziness-and I'm so busy leading up to Christmas I won't have much time to shop -
So I am thinking nibbles- Cheese and pate and cold meats and chutneys and whatnot..... Open to ideas though!  :)

Not sure what to bring to J's Mum's house either- she always has too much food as it is - But I can't go empty handed. Last year I brought peppermint bark, a yummy triffle, and a smoked haddock pate. But there was so much food, most of it didn't get touched and I ate leftovers for a week after (but it was yummy!) Haven't a clue what to do this year!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

We never do a full-on meal on Christmas Eve because there's so much eating the next day! We'll probably do what we usually do and have hors d'oeuvres and champers. A couple of years ago we had a 'make your own sushi' night and then was fab! I made up bowls of all the bits to go in them, and a big bowl of rice and then people just rolled whatever they wanted - fish or veggie.

Christmas Day will be the traditional turkey meal here with all the usual bits and pieces. And TONS of roast potatoes. Although we do like Christmas pudding, we always find it too heavy after all that turkey, so I usually make something different for dessert. This year I'm going to make Nigel Slater's Christmas trifle - the one with mincemeat sponge and lemon curd in it.

On Boxing Day we go to the MIL's and it's never fun. She doesn't cook, so she gets so stressed out about what to feed us - when actually we'd be happy with cheese and biscuits since there are so many leftovers back at home. This year she suggested a roast chicken dinner which is absurd to me! Who needs two roasts on back-to-back days! I think last year it was salmon and that was good.

I have friends visiting from Luxembourg and they want to eat at a rather post restaurant so who am I to complain?  ;D

Do J's parents drink? You could always take a nice bottle of something as it won't go to waste.

Hey a posh restaurant is always great too! No cleanup!  ;)

Oh yeah, alcohol always flows there. Last year I brought some gorgeous sparkling wine that came from Aldi.   No one could believe it when I told them it came from Aldi.  I shall actually have to pop over there and see what they've got going on for alcohol offers!

But then you won't have any leftovers! That's the best part of Christmas dinner!

I love nibbles on Christmas eve. We're having ham on Christmas day. I'll make my MIL's potato stuffing for DH. My friend reminded me about making sausage rolls, so I'll probably make some of those to take along. Not sure what we'll do for Stephen's Day. My mom seems to think we're spending Christmas night there. I'm not so sure. :-P

I grew up having nibbles on Christmas Eve.  However, DH always wants something a bit more.  This year we will make sushi and have nibbles as well.

For Christmas Day I'll roast a turkey breast and possibly a small ham with sides (dressing, potatoes, veg). I didn't bother buying a Christmas pudding this year as we aren't that keen on it-unless I get one marked down on Christmas Eve.

Since our oldest daughter is now gluten free I've ordered a gluten free Christmas cake from M&S.

As usual it will just be the four of us.  My in laws will stop by for a brief visit on Boxing Day.  It works for us.

It's just 4 of us for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day (DH, step-son, and DH's brother). I do a ham on Christmas Eve and serve cold with chutneys, salads and other tidbits; a turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas Day, and a roast beef with roasted veg on Boxing Day.

I know it sounds like a massive amount of food, but although I make a LOT of side dishes, I am careful to make small amounts.  We all just tend to have a bit of this and a bit of that, so we can try everything. We send several days' worth of food home with his brother, and we have several days of leftovers as well (which we love, especially me, because after all that cooking I need a few day's off!) :)

I freeze whatever I can as well, for turkey curries and beef potpies later on.

My family spent Christmas every year in Atlanta and our traditional Christmas Eve dinners was at the Varsity.  If you know Atlanta, hopefully that gave you a laugh.  The rest of my family will be enjoying the Varsity again this year.   ;D

My parents will be here for Christmas and we are spending it at my in-laws house.  MIL is cooking and she is by far the best cook I have ever met and I'm looking forward to my parents getting to try her food.  Traditional dinner with all the trimmings.

Boxing day we are going to my husband's cousin's house.  We're doing a cold buffet there and everyone is supposed to bring something... we've been assigned "meat".   ::)

But I am uber excited for Christmas Day as my husband and I are expecting our first baby and we had the sex of the baby written in a card to open on Christmas Day when our families are together.  Couldn't care less about ANYTHING ELSE this year!  lol!   ;D

A big laugh -- thank you!   ;D

Mr MX and I will be at home, just the two of us, for Christmas this year.  We're having nibbles -- meats, cheeses, olives, roasted peppers, spreads -- I'm really looking forward to it.  We'll see family starting on Boxing Day and have a more traditional British Christmas meal with turkey, etc.

No!  We've had the card for a month!  I was dying to open it the day of the scan but have been okay with waiting since.
