Did you have a bill with your name on it? That's the last key piece I needed to be added to my husband's NatWest account.

I had an estimated bill for our energy company, but the bank wouldn't accept it but the Registers office did? So I had to wait for the official bill to come in the mail right after we got married.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Can anyone please help or give any idea of how to get a bank account here in the UK? Went to be added as a joint account with my husband at nationwide bank which are absolutely useless gave all my info id driver license passport spouse visa and NI number and a week letter received a letter I can not be added because of my financial record. I am new to this country I have no record I am so upset they make this things so impossible!!!

Getting a bank account here can be awkward, as I know other forum members have found before.

I think in the past some people have actually found it easier to open their own individual account than to be added to their spouse's account.

Have you tried opening your own account at all, or tried any other banks? I think some banks can be easier to open accounts at than others... though I'm not sure which ones.

Nationwide are actually a Building Society rather than a regular bank, so maybe they have stricter conditions on opening accounts (that's just a guess - I don't know for sure)?

Well we try my husbands current bank or building society... When at the bank they just asked for id, NI and passport never said anything about having to be "accepted" is just a bank account. In the USA I still have my credit union. I will try another bank and see. Thanks for your info ksand24. The process doesn't get any easier
