Which of these ingredients are available?
« on: August 17, 2017, 07:29:15 PM »
I was just wondering if I could continue making a few of my favorite recipes in the UK. How many of these things have you actually seen your regular supermarket (I'm not talking about specialty shops)?

HERBS/SPICES:
Chilli powder (that really tastes like chilli powder)
Cayenne pepper powder
Smoked paprika
Onion powder
Italian seasoning
Powdered ginger
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Vanilla extract
Almond extract

CONDIMENTS
Tamari sauce (or just any reduced sodium soy sauce)
Sriracha
Toasted sesame oil

OTHER
Sour cream
Cottage cheese
Applesauce
Steam-in-bag vegetables
Frozen chopped spinach
Frozen chopped onions (my eyes are sensitive)
Low sodium broth in boxes
Tortillas
Big jars of minced garlic
Minced ginger
Diced tomatoes in cans
Refrigerated pie crusts
Molasses
Canned pumpkin (I know this is a stretch)
Powdered peanut butter, like PB2 (another stretch)

(I just realized this list is huge.  :D)
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

OTHER
Sour cream. a bit different but fine for me
Cottage cheese. Yes
Applesauce. In the baby food aisle.  Not the same.  Very puréed
Steam-in-bag vegetables yes
Frozen chopped spinach. Not seen it
Frozen chopped onions (my eyes are sensitive). Yes, but I buy fresh chopped for 22p
Low sodium broth in boxes. nope
Tortillas. Flour, yes
Big jars of minced garlic. Small yes.  Big at Costco
Minced ginger. not minced but grated.  Look at "very lazy" brand products
Diced tomatoes in cans. Yes
Refrigerated pie crusts. Nope
Molasses. nope
Canned pumpkin (I know this is a stretch). Yes, though last year was a shortage year
Powdered peanut butter, like PB2 (another stretch)

(I just realized this list is huge.  :D)

Replies in blue.  This website is pretty good for helping figure out which store to go to:

I've seen almost all of the herbs/spices in every supermarket - I have most of them in my kitchen.

You can get these too.  Sainsbury's has them all.

The applesauce is different. To me, it is more like Apple pie filling. It's Bramley chunky apples, super sweetened . I've not looked in baby food aisle.

I thought I saw molasses at Sainsbury's but not 100%.

Tesco usually has canned pumpkin in the American aisle.

I've also seen powdered peanut butter at either Sainsbury's or Tesco.

Refrigerated pie crust? You can buy the sheets of short crust pastry. Same thing, just not round.

I have frozen chopped spinach in my freezer.

It might be sold as Black Treacle rather than 'molasses': https://www.ocado.com/productImages/106/10633011_0_640x640.jpg?identifier=d99f8159f1a6d9345644e599dfa28c29

Holland & Barrett has molasses. It's not a supermarket but a health food store that's country wide.

You're in luck ,these are all easily found

There isn't much you can't find these days, to be honest.  Or you just find an equivalent or substitute or you just learn to live without

I have also seen everything on the list aside from the powdered PB, but that's something I've never actually tried to find. I have both black treacle and molasses (from H&B), and I find there is a slight difference. I prefer molasses for most things.

Where I fall short are things like ranch dressing mix (for recipes). I make my own, but it's not quite the same. Same with the Lipton's Onion Soup mix, which I like to put in the crock pot for pot roast. Still can't find an adequate substitute.

I also get a craving for Tater Tots once in a while. Still haven't found an adequate substitute, and even Bon Appétit has them on a 'buy, don't make' list.

I scored a ton of canned pumpkin (which BA also says to buy, rather that making your own puree) at Aldi 2 years ago when they had one of their 'American themed' special weeks. Last year I bought it at Waitrose on offer and it was pretty cheap.

What do you do with powdered peanut butter?  Why not just use peanuts?

Make smoothies, use it in baking, etc.

Tater tots, for me, are merely a ketchup delivery system.  I don't really like them, but with enough ketchup, I can appreciate a small portion.  I also, and similarly, do not like McDonald's "hasbrowns".  But have you tried satisfying your tater tot craving with a trip to McDonald's during breakfast hours?

Speaking of hashbrowns, I didn't go to Waffle House much in the 'States, but after moving here I missed their hashbrowns.  I tried to explain it to my husband and failed (he thought McDonald's were what hashbrowns are), so I made some.  He just watched me grating my potatoes with that skeptical look he has any time I introduce him to American things (pot roast!)... but after he tried them, hashbrowns (with eggs and toast) became a breakfast regular at the weekend until we moved to the house-without-a-kitchen.  This was one of our last Potato Day breakfasts, after our toaster broke so I started making the toast in the skillet:

We don't have tater tots here? Or shredded hash browns?

That giant hash brown looks like a potato pancake that they make in Eastern Europe.  Nice!
