It will be fabulous, wherever you are, just that your family this year will have permanent fur coats.

And they are absolutely lovely :) Mine will be happy to have live-in friends for a week or two! :p

That sounds like an amazing day!  Did you all really live so close that this was feasible?  And the nice thing is you're already starting to burn off the calories as you're consuming them!  No putting it off 'til after the holidays!
Well, this would be my parents and the friends we're close to in their town.  The friends are like family--like my best friend's parents are my parents' best friends, and we were all raised together.  Her parents are like an aunt and uncle to me and we spent all the holidays together.  I've never spent Christmas or Thanksgiving or whatever with grandparents or real aunts and uncles as they were too far away or estranged (my mom has siblings she's in touch with now, but they were orphaned and split up so it took decades for them to get back in touch and have relationships).

Could you do an early (or late) celebration of Christmas with your family??

Eh, I'm not sure it's really worth it.  Every year that I have spent Christmas with my family for at least ten years my mom spends a lot of time b*tching and moaning about the effort that Christmas requires.  Even though the last few years I've been the one doing the majority of the work.  And last year when we were newlywed but apart while waiting for the visa I realized that I'd rather spend it with my husband than anyone.  I love my family but I like not having drama.

Who knows though.  Maybe someday I'll have a job in the industry that doesn't require me to be in town on Christmas Eve and/or Boxing Day.  We'll see how things go.

Reviving this thread because it's feeling more and more autumnal outside every day, and because I found this old photo that I backed up on my laptop from a previous cellphone...

Walmart would make it so easy for me.  *wistful*

Amazon kindly delivered the Red Hots and, unfortunately, I have started eating them!
I can't see me having many left by the end of November.

I've never heard of this drinking red hots thing but I would give it a go.  Are those like Atomic Fireballs?

No, Red Hots are much milder and sweeter than Atomic Fireballs (probably because the individual Red Hot candies are smaller, so the sugar shell to cinnamon ratio will be different).  Red Hots do have a cinnamon kick to them, but I ate them as a child, so Red Hots can't be too 'hot'.  ... Have you really never had them before?

Edited to add:  THIS is an interesting blog/post.

Nope, never had a Red Hot.  I have eaten plenty of atomic fireballs though.

Interesting link, but before I knew it, I was being tempted with 5 pounds of fireballs!

And crushing disappointment when I can't have it.

Can I just say I find Thanksgiving really miserable here.  You have to work, then you are obligated to call all your families and listen to them talk about what a great meal they are having.  And you don't get any thanksgiving meal because you've been working all day and don't have time to cook.

You could always take a day of annual leave (or work from home if your job lets you!)  ;D ;D ;D

Ooooh, I didn't think of that.  I don't do calls home.  It's too much like seeing what it'll be like after I die and their lives carry on without me.  Either it would annoy me, or make me sad.

That's an interesting approach.  I've always hated making those calls but feel very obligated to do it at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  On the other hand, I know if I did not call them, they would never call me.  Nothing is ever easy.

Bizarre thought about how it's like seeing how their lives continue after you die.  I have a similar thought about how it feels like I am the great peacemaker when I come home.  We want to meet at my Uncle's house but his daughter hasn't been there since he remarried and can't stand to see the house changed by another woman.  But, since Nelson Mandela (me) is coming to town, she's going to come for lunch....and I'm supposed to care!  Ugh.
