Things I miss
« on: May 11, 2018, 10:20:56 PM »
It really annoys me.
I have to go New York or Boston to get good
PIZZA
PICKLES
KNISH
CHOW MEIN
PRETZILS
COFFEE & DUNKIN DONUTS
MEATBALL HERO
REAL MOZZARELLA
BOLOGNE
HAM & CHEESE ON RYE.
I really miss living in the USA.

Yeah, the pizza can be underwhelming.  Have found a couple of hole-in-the-wall shops run by Italians that make just a killer pizza, though. Hard to find, trial-and-error, but worth the effort!

Yeah we have found a pizza place in Margate that is nice but it still isn't just the same as NY pizza.

Add black and white cookies to the list.

Saltine Crackers (Especially when I have a stomach bug)
Nordica Cottage Cheese (Nothing else tastes right)
Good Sushi Ginger (The stuff here, even at Waitrose, is gross and slimy)
Bagels, real actual New York bagels
White Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips
Any real Mexican Food for that matter
Chocolate Ice Cream (This is the one I miss most.  Not the bitter dark chocolate stuff they have here, but the creamy, milk chocolaty US type.)

Port wine cheese spread
Wheat Thins to eat my port wine cheese spread on
Raisinets (not to be confused with mere chocolate-covered raisins!)
Store-brand cheap white sandwich bread that doesn't taste like sawdust
Mountain Dew (the regular kind, not the UK variant)

Chocolate Ice Cream (This is the one I miss most.  Not the bitter dark chocolate stuff they have here, but the creamy, milk chocolaty US type.)

How does Carte D'Or Chocolate fit into this continuum (Not the "indulgent chocolate", which boasts of being dark chocolate?  I didn't eat much chocolate ice cream in the US because there were too many other flavors that were more interesting to me.  But over here, I've found Carte D'Or's chocolate to be satisfactory for milkshakes (with a bit of rum fun blended in).

Chocolate ice cream milkshakes with rum?  Chimichangas?  After living in a van down by the river for months, your husband must thing he's died and gone to heaven.

He is quite content now that all the bad stuff is behind us.  No more commuting... and now he's really loving having ILR sorted.  I didn't realize how much that was weighing on him.  But now it's all behind us and he has been able to enjoy life so much more.  I'm not sure what we did over the weekend, but the utili-kitchen was an explosion of dishes this morning.  We clearly had a good time.  :)

Yeah.  We still may not have a kitchen, but we're doing really well.  Life is good.  *grin*

I do have to admit that the things I do miss from the US are almost exclusively food related...hah

I also miss being able to go to Lowe's or Home Depot and getting all the timber I want, in different varieties, and stuff.  And I miss being able to go into Michael's or a fabric store and getting all the random craft supplies I didn't know I needed.  And some food... mostly junk food, though.  :)

I must be the only person who doesn't miss Target...

I mean I shopped there on occasion, but it wasn't my go to for anything really.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I'm curious to know if this varies depending on where you lived in the US. Target was right around the corner from me and the pricing was just so reasonable that it was my go-to for nearly everything besides groceries! (also, they have EVERYTHING so it was just easy but their groceries were limited so I didn't bother buying proper food there). There was even Starbucks there so I could get a coffee and spend all my remaining money at the same time lol. Target was essentially like crack.
