Scotland and the ‘heat’
« on: June 28, 2018, 09:58:39 PM »
Right. I need to rant where people understand where I’m coming from. I’d write more but I’m typing from my phone.
Let me preface this with: I swear I’m a good person, and certainly care about the wellfare of animals.

BUT OH MY GOD PEOPLE ARE BEING IDIOTIC ABOUT THEIR DOGS’ ABILITY TO FUNCTION IN 80F WEATHER.

I had to leave a Facebook group today because a woman was all - ‘I saw some sick bastard taking his dog on a walk this morning - will no one think of their poor paws!?’. I swear to god at time of writing it couldn’t have been much over 70f.

I’m losing it, people - losing it! People complaining about how hot it is but they are STILL WEARING TROUSERS.

Anyways, I digress. Please, please, sympathy only. I *do* realise some dogs fare very poorly in the heat, some really don’t like it, etc. But honestly, you’d think no dog ever had experienced temperatures such as today’s by the way they were going on.....

(It’s been a long week, can you tell?)

I'm relieved to hear they are being cautious about dogs in the heat. I was anxious that it was going to be the other way around.  :)

My friend literally messaged me about the heat in Scotland today/night and it ended with me laughing out loud and him saying “I literally have my t*ts out! It’s so hot!” He said it was 32!! I can not believe Scotland even has thermometers that get that hot

Right, how do I word this delicately - I’m completely on your side by the way.  ;D
I think, obviously, use your own discretion - I have walked my mini schnauzer in the excessive heat in Los Angeles and she’s done well with it. Then again that was heat that was hitting 100F and a bit above. I always kept my eye on her, so on the few occasions she reacted to the hot pavement and seemed uncomfortable, I scooped her up and plopped her in the grass to do her business or just carried her inside. I was in an apartment at the time so walking her outside was a necessity for her to the use the bathroom.

But, ultimately, I think some people might be just a wee bit too sensitive to the idea of doggy paws not doing well in the sun. Sure, our bare feet may not fare well on concrete warmed up by summer sun, but the pads of doggy paws are not as tender as human feet.

I’m currently in the state of Georgia waiting on my spousal visa to come through, and 80F sounds like a dream! Although I appreciate that it’s heat some parts of the UK may not be accustomed to.  ;)

Yeah, it was that hot. Broke a record, apparently for the hottest day ever in Glasgow. Some of the roads are looking a bit melty, so I wouldn't want a dog to walk on them. I figure that if I can't walk barefoot on a surface, probably a dog shouldn't either. Just to be safe. And definitely not on the melty roads.

It can stop this now. Really. Anytime. Preferably now.

Excuse me, Meterological Gods, but may I please have more of the cool, damp, cloudy days with the pleasant breeze again, sirs/madams?

Will the heat kill midges, or just make more of them?

It's "Tops Aff" here this week. I saw an amazing number of future skin cancer cases walking home from the park yesterday evening. Looking out the window, could see people tinged purple walking down the other side of the street. (Bet they are not enjoying the sun this morning!) A pasty-white neighbor went out at 1:00pm and put out a blanket and lay on it in Very Little Clothing. I think she fell asleep, as she was still out there a couple of hours later. (That's probably not ending well for her.)  The Daughter went out on an errand at about 7:00pm and was dressed appropriately, and came back in red in the face and miserable. (Amazing how one acclimates and can't handle what would have been routine if they lived elsewhere.)

This morning I have all the windows open and we have a pleasant, cool breeze coming in. But it looks like total blue skies, so I would imagine that in a couple of hours it will be time to put the shades down and close some of those windows.

So, yeah, this can stop, anytime now!

Rain would be good, too. For the pollen.

Girl, I'm right there with you.  Of course it goes without saying people need to know what is okay/not okay for their animal.  A friend told me the other day how her kids had to take shade breaks after 5 minutes of playing.  5 minutes playing, 10 minutes sitting in the shade.  It is a bit extreme.

Oh, yeah. Definitely. I have a bank of southwest facing windows and have been having to water the plants (including my peppers) in their pots on the sills daily. (The peppers love the heat, though, and have been growing like crazy.) The poor gardens need a nice, serious, day-long rain.

A nice thunderstorm to break the heat would be good!  :)

Well, having lived in Texas a good part of my life, I have to say that for kids, when the sun is as direct as it is during this time of the year here, the old adage goes:  "If your shadow is shorter than you are, you should be playing in the shade."

And if you are not acclimated to the heat, shade is always the better option. Heatstroke is an ugly, unpleasant thing. (May I never have to deal with anyone having it ever again!)

I agree! Because we're not used to this kind of heat in the UK, it's far safer to be cautious, especially for the elderly, the young and our pets.

In the unlikely event that someone is not familiar with heatstroke, here's an informative read:
