Oak or Pine?
« on: June 29, 2018, 05:07:55 PM »
I have been online today trying to figure out how to visually identify oak vs pine.  I have always thought Pine was knotty and I guess there is also knotty oak.  I am looking at a used dinning table that I can’t find online, they listed as oak but I am not sure.  Husband said he thinks he would know if he saw it in person but I think we are both too timid to get there and then not buy the table if it’s not oak.  I am also not sure if given the condition the top is in, if it’s too expensive at £200.  We would have to sand and wax, and Minwax is expensive on amazon.

It's not giving permission for me now either, it was a Google drive file.

She sold the table so I took the link off, but interested to see if you think it's pine or oak.

Should work now :)

Looks like pine to me - some oak will have knots, but the grain looks exactly like the pine floors I had in my house in VA.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

My husband and I agree that it looks like pine.  The grain looks pine.  The colour is odd, but it looks like it may have previously been painted and later stripped, or something.  Or it's just old pine.

Yeah, I think it looks like pine that had an oak-coloured varnish on it.

:P

I admit I was absent all weekend (my husband was off Friday and Sunday, and only had to go in for a half-day on Saturday, so it was like having a 3-day weekend.  And the weather was amazing!  But I'm back now, trying to get used to the new digs.  It's a struggle!

But I did reply to this thread earlier today!  *points up*  Like, three posts ago?  I was leaning toward pine and my husband agreed.  I'm convinced its not oak (the grain is way too straight), but the colour is odd for pine, so either something has been done to it, or it's a third species altogether.  But I vote pine with some kind of unusual finish.
