Today we got an email from my new workplace (been there 2 weeks) saying that everyone has to ride a bike from Uxbridge to Brighton, or get dropped off in the south downs 20 miles from Brighton and walk for 6 hours.  Then we camp out in Brighton.
F**CK that.  I am a contractor and riding a bike to Brighton is not on my list of services.

Good Luck Curby and congrats on the job.

I would reply to that email with a meme.  Surely they can’t be serious?!?

Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration on the required bit, but I get the idea it's frowned upon not to go.  I immediately scheduled my holidays during that time.  And yes, I am going camping.

can’t believe that’s even allowed!

Though if I’m honest, it does sound like fun! I’d be down But starting at Uxbridge is a little harsh

Yeah... I literally can't do that. Company social engagement committees assume everyone is able bodied, allergy free, and happy to be more active.

Massive congratulations!  I'm excited for you!  Enthusiasm is awesome!

That's immediately what I thought.  "I can't do that, and I would be left out of a networking opportunity."  This sort of thing can add up over one's career.

Just a heads up to anyone else looking for work, if asked “what salary can we offer you that would make you accept the role?”, don’t start with your lowball answer 🤦🏾‍♂️ I’m kicking myself. I gave the average of what this position makes in the area, but now that I’m thinking about it, I feel like I should have aimed higher. They’ve accepted what I said and have offered me that salary. I forgot that in some private sector organisations, there’s no standardisation regarding pay. Who knows if someone else doing the exact same job as me will be on significantly more money than me. I was so happy to be offered a role that I forgot to negotiate.

Question: I know it’s too late to ask for more, but say in a year I’m doing really well in the role. Is it then ok to reevaluate salary? Or even ok to ask if the salary I asked for is on par with others doing the same role? I feel in the dark on this.

I said "what is the available range?" and went for the high end. It helps I was earning more in the US.

I got the job through an agency, but am reluctant to ask her. It’s a perm position though so the company agreed the salary. There was no mention of ranges (I should have asked...I’m really kicking myself right now).

No harm in asking, though likely too late to negotiate now.

Unfortunately the UK isn't *great* at rewarding hard work.  The easiest way to increase your salary is to find new work, sadly.  That being said, hopefully that's not the case for you.

Have you had a look at glassdoor.co.uk?
