Butter Popcorn, Tortillas, and Pumpkin Spice??
« on: February 05, 2019, 09:37:51 PM »
I'm moving to the UK in the next few months, but was just there recently and went on the hunt for some of my favorite food items to keep at my new home. Of course, I ran into some trouble...

The Brits don't believe in buttered popcorn? I found ONE box in a Tesco, but calling it buttered popcorn was a stretch. It was pretty plain. I crave movie theater butter popcorn. Is that possible?

I love me some soft flour tacos, but in small or fajita sizes... which I could not find. All I found available was burrito sizes. My only option?

And pumpkin spice this fall will be a must. I already figured I would be making most of my treats at home. But I'm finding pumpkin puree and spice cake are hard to come by. I found some on Amazon UK, but are there any store options?

I've found pumpkin in Sainsburys without much trouble, in the American section with Reeses and candy. I haven't compared it to Libby's yet, but I found that in the American section of Longacres. I found pumpkin spice on amazon from a lil Scottish spice shop, it just needs a tad more cinnamon so its pretty close to right. (I didn't want to buy all the individual spices)

No microwave buttered popcorn :( and in movie theaters it's not either.

Try Costco for buttered popcorn. We've gotten huge boxes of Orville Redenbacher movie theater butter popcorn from there.

Buttered popcorn....

I'm fairly certain that small flour tortillas are in Tesco.

Aren't Pumpkin pie spices just a mix of easily available spices?

Wait till you go to the movies here and find out that the popcorn is from a bag, popped a month ago.

Yes!

A good recipe for pumpkin pie spice is
3 Tablespoons ground cinnamon
 2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1 ½ teaspoons ground allspice
 1 ½ teaspoons ground cloves.

Mixed spice is easily found and a very good replacement if you can't be bothered to make pumpkin pie spice. A common recipe for Mixed spice is:
1 Tablespoons ground allspice.
1  Tablespoons ground cinnamon.
1  Tablespoons ground nutmeg.
2 teaspoons ground mace.
1 teaspoons ground cloves.
1 teaspoons ground coriander.
1 teaspoons ground Ginger.

So not much in it at all.

Small flour tortillas are available. Sometimes they're next to the bread, instead of near the 'Mexican' food.

Pumpkin may not be out this time of year, but found in 'American' sections easily enough.

Popcorn , I like sweet and salty popcorn, so I'm no use. But I like to make my own too. I got an air popper from Lidl years ago and it's been great.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

If you haven’t moved yet order yourself this little microwave gadget from pampered chef.

I’m sure you can find a cheaper version, but my mom got me one and it’s great. You just put kernels in the bowl and there’s a little container you put butter in if you want it. Pop it in the microwave and the butter melts all over the popcorn. So good!

I have this one from Bed Bath & Beyond -

https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/cuisinart-reg-collapsible-microwave-popcorn-maker/1045476921?keyword=microwave-popcorn-popper

Baking Buddy pumpkin puree from Sainsburys and Waitrose works great, and spice mix for pumpkin pie is easily made from a mix of readily available spices. I actually never use a pre-mix pumpkin pie spice; always used individual spices in my pie and pumpkin bread.

WHAT ?? No buttered popcorn.. ok.. this may be a deal breaker LOL..Not really  ::).. I put so much butter on popcorn at the movies that its floating at the bottom of the tub. Thanks for that knowledge, I may have to stick a pack in my suitcase, along with taco seasoning( not the known kind, but the kind in the Mexican food spice section) and Hidden Valley ranch dressing mix.

For the tortillas - check the "Mexican" section :) My local Sainsbury's has a selection of all different sizes (and some flour, some corn, some mixed).

I've seen buttered before but not like "movie theatre buttered" like we get when we actually go to the cinema. Could just add your own melted butter perhaps??  Should do the trick :)

RE pumpkin spice, you don't get the seasoning here but you can make it yourself from all the individual seasonings. You can get pumpkin puree but rare to see a spice cake mix outside of Amazon or American food stores I think (but you'll pay outrageous prices for them!)

You get Taco seasonings over here okay :) (from my experience anyways at Sainsbury's) and you'll get buttered popcorn AT the movies, but it's rare you'll get the same quality of buttered popcorn in the packages you pop at home :) They are "buttered" but they don't taste nearly as buttery.

In my search to see what sainsbury's had, as I do see buttered popcorn there, I managed to find this! https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/gb/groceries/eazypop-microwave-popcorns-butter-100g?langId=44&storeId=10151&krypto=fSXRIc85mbcSACqsRBUutVmJooWvPvO0GlMy2wZdIep5KGB9O6lBW2F%2BSvWo064e6Uo6nCRN3NPMgabTRChBnrDkvE4G9ngbRGwx5Epk7vUnqhKgc%2FCzeIJf60FpVBtMobl8STf%2FIbUyINrtu3nIB1lvhH%2BjjhYVYJsxgfGWa84%3D&ddkey=https%3Agb%2Fgroceries%2Feazypop-microwave-popcorns-butter-100g

Don't ask me ANY questions about it LOL I'm personally a fan of sweet & salty now but at the movies, I like a mix of the sweet and salty that also has butter on it. Looks like you can order seasonings online so perhaps the option is to pop your own popcorn and either add your own butter or order the popcorn seasonings :)

Tesco Plain Mini Tortillas are the best supermarket ones I've tried here for taco/fajita sized items, and I've tried a lot.

I find Tesco and Sainsbury's own brands always seem to have really good quality options! Even Tesco Value Chocoldate is actually surprisingly delicious for only 70p or something ridiculous like that for a big bar! hhah
