Waiting for an appointment with cardiology and an urgent ekg.

I can understand you having to wait for a cardiology appointment but if the ekg is urgent, why would they not send you for one as a walk in?

If you don't hear anything by Monday I would call the secretary for the department and make sure the referral came through. The NHS isn't the greatest at times.

Good advice, with the NHS you have to be pushy.

I have been fortunate with my 2 urgent referrals. In each case I walked out of the GP's office with a printed referral letter which had a phone number to call and a referral code. In both cases I was given a date and time within 2 weeks where I saw a specialist. (Cardiology in one case, skin cancer in the other).

My wife had an urgent referral after an eye test and the optician put the request through telling her that she hear back from the hospital in 24-48 hours. She had to go down again 2 days later and the optician's office called the hospital stayed on the phone with them until they gave her a date and time the following week.  The letter from the hospital confirming the day and time arrived the day after she had been down to the hospital and had her appointment with the ophthalmologist.

Good point.  I have had several ekgs at my GP's office and the specialist referral came immediately after I registered as being in atrial fibrillation.

They said someone would be calling me soon. She was surprised I didn't have a  cell phone, but asked if my home phone had an answering machine and was satisfied that it did.

What department would I call? Cardiology? At the Death Star? Or some other place? If I haven't heard anything by Monday I'll phone the GP office and ask how it works.

She said if I felt the same symptoms again to phone 999. She also said it would not be out of the question to present at A&E, and when I was asking directions and said I'd have to take a cab or bus she said no, that the ambulance would take me there. So....? Eh?

The Daughter was supposed to go with me to the appointment to help me remember everything but she overslept and I had to go without her.

999 is essentially calling for an ambulance.

111 is the non-emergency line.

Yeah, I got it. I told the Daughter to dial 111 and tell them what the GP said, if it happens again, and let them decide about the ambulance. So we're going out walking in a bit and we'll see how the day goes. (I've got cabin fever really bad and it looks like we'll have a good period without rain today.)

Ok, so I've been behaving myself and doing pretty well. Still having the odd episode, but not so badly. I do wonder if it's a virus or something.... As long as I don't overdo it, all is well. If I try to walk too fast outside, I get to sit down and catch my breath. That's better than when just being up and around the house was making me out of breath. I did a lot today - transplanted some houseplants, did the dishes, did a load of laundry, vacuumed the front of the house. We'll see how tomorrow goes - if it's as it's been lately, I'll be sleeping a lot tomorrow. That doesn't sound like heart stuff. It really does sound like lung stuff, especially with this obnoxious new cough.

Whatever. I'm tired of it. Tired of being tired. It needs to get over with. So, anyway, ECG  at the end of this week, appointment with cardiology at the end of next week. Thankfully, neither appointment is at the DeathStar (the new hospital with all the people getting dead from various obscure infections, including the pigeon droppings in the ventilation system). So thanks for all the advice, sorry if I worried anyone.  :)

All the best Nan and good luck with your upcoming ekg.

While I was having intermittent heart problems I had multiple instances of feeling dizzy and irregular heart beat as indicated on my BP monitor but never when I went in for tests, and this both in the USA and here in England. Both there and here I even wore a monitor for 48 hours but never had an episode during those times.

In the end I splashed out $99 on a device so I could take my own ekg’s. In the UK it costs £99. The NHS knows all about it and accept the traces you can save as a pdf and/or print out to show the doctor.

Just something for you to consider if this drags on undiagnosed.

Well I hope it is a virus Nan, but definitely hope they get to the bottom of it for you.

So I'd have to have a smart phone for that, right?

oh foop. of course it is.

I see this coming. I'm going to get there, everything will be "normal". I'll walk out, get halfway to where we are having lunch, and it'll hit again.
When I get in to see the cardio lady, everything will be normal. And I'll get that "well, come back if it bothers you again" that I'd get for almost everything in the States and by the time I get an appointment to come back the episode will be long over and everything will be "normal" again.  ::)

Handy-looking little gadget, though. :)

That might happen. But they can always arrange a 24 hour ECG or a stress test if they think it's indicated.

This sort of thing happened to our friend here a few years ago and it would never repeat during 24 hour monitors or treadmill stress tests. (Every now and then after exercise he would feel dizzy and then be low energy for a few hours).

In the end they implanted a small device in his chest just under the skin and gave him a small remote to carry. Each time he had an episode he would hold the remote close to his chest and press a button which would cause the device to hold a recording of the last 60 seconds and a couple of minutes more. On his next visit they uploaded the recordings using a Bluetooth reader. With him it turned out to be an issue where his body would not always control his BP properly after exercise. They fixed him up with a prescription he still takes today.
