Has anyone had success with Barclays?
We no longer have a US bank account and so deposited at Barclays (cheque negotiation).
Money should have been credited in 3 working days - now on day 6 and still waiting.

We are having some great difficulty in trying to cash my wife’s stimulus cheque

The cheque is in her maiden name but she uses her married name in the U.K.  Barclays were no help so we tried to open up a bank account with HSBC, however she doesn’t have anything recent with maiden name on that counts as proof of address.

Has anyone else encountered this? Are there any alternatives to using a bank?

How infuriating, considering the cheque is a recent proof of address with her maiden name on it. Banks can be quite arsey and unreasonable when they really don't want to do something.

I'm in the same boat as you, I have no idea how I can cash mine, its in my maiden name and I really don't want to risk sending it back overseas to my US bank, which according to them is my only option.

I see that there is an option of receiving your $ on a debit card, maybe exchange back for one. Not ideal I know, but options are limited.

Yeah.. it’s a massive pain in the ars*. We called Sky this afternoon and asked them to change the name on the bill to her maiden name. Fingers crossed the bank will accept this as proof of address.

Hey! It sounds like you're in a similar residential situation to me, but I have not received a stimulus cheque. Although I've also filed tax returns every year, I've never reached the threshold that would cause me to pay US tax. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with my not receiving a cheque. If you don't mind me asking, have you actually had to pay US tax in the course of your residency here?

HSBC now charge £28 per check (sic). which is a real pain - I received a refund check and then a second check for waiver of penalties - £56 in fees to cash them at HSBC - before I had a TransferWise account.

Barclays charged me a commission £30.85 to deposit a US dollar check into my £ current account last November.  Exchange rate was 1.3925 $/£.  It took at least four weeks, as I recall.

Hi both,

Thanks for that. Natwest have told me its only £10 but when i asked about the exchange rate they were a little less sure. I feel its the best option available to me.

thanks
