Nomad-wouldn't it be easier to get the baby a Italian passport rather than a visa?

Hi Mindy! I wish it were as easy as that... The Italian consulate here in London does not issue babies passports for some reason, so she is named in my husbands passport....so any travel must be done with him present until her American passport gets her stamp in it. It's silly I know...

But if she's on your husband's Italian passport why does she need a visa to live in the UK? Isn't that proof she's an EU national?

Just a quick note to clear this up because it's come up before an will no doubt come up again.  Although the baby will not have UK citizenship if it's born before you're married, you will have NO PROBLEM getting the baby UK citizenship after you're married.  It's called legitimizing the birth(getting married) and your baby will be eligible for all it citizen's rights.

How does that work, does the marriage certificate legitimize the birth, what paperwork is needed?

Richard and I were given information on this as Nicholas was born before we were married. We'll have to go back to the registrar and have his birth certificate amended. After that, when Nicholas gets a passport, he'll just show the BC, along with any of forms of ID, and that will be that.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

When we applied for the first passport we had to show the birth certificate and marriage certificate and that was pretty much that.

I thought it odd as well, and thought her being an EU citizen would be enough...that's why we never did anything about it but in the end had trouble at customs. I think it might be a loophole or something... They say she needs a visa in her American passport to live here regardless and this is the passport we use to go to US (without her daddy most times). Am I confusing you as much as I am confusing myself writing this..I think I still have placenta brain!!

Same here, and both were US documents, birth and marriage.
