I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I don't know where in the States the OP has been, if he/she has been, but, we do have green grass and nature. These are my favourite places with plenty of greenery. Not saying that I want to 'go home' or anything, just making a point.

This is part of what is difficult about immigration, because the children of immigrants to the UK are British, just as the children of immigrants to the US are American.

Late to the thread but wanted to say Dara O'Briain has a great bit about this in his book Tickling the English about a routine he did called "I will love my English child".

And I love how the response to this troll was to discuss pajamas and ovaltine!

Personally, I think someone is not an immigrant in the country they were born in, regardless of where their parents are from.  This is part of what is difficult about immigration, because the children of immigrants to the UK are British, just as the children of immigrants to the US are American.

Well, to be fair not really.  You aren't British if your parents aren't since being born here doesn't confer citizenship.

Huh? I thought anyone born here was automatically a British citizen, like it is in the US?  ???

Either way, it doesn't matter. I don't see how anyone concerned about immigration can really complain about partners or spouses immigrating to be with their significant others in genuine relationships. I'm here because I married an English guy, who is the man I love, I enjoy living here, but I don't give a diddly about where we live so long as we are together and can be happy. However, he has a young son here and so this is where we chose to live. I work, I pay taxes, I don't take benefits and I don't cause anyone any trouble. My husband wants me here, and his family, who also have strong feelings about immigration, support my being here as his wife. For the most part, most all of us on the forum are here because of marriage or partnership to a British person, otherwise, they are most likely highly qualified / skilled in some area and their profession is in demand in this country. Some people have ancestry and therefore have obtained their British citizenship based on that. As far as I am aware, we are all here legally and not just for free health care or whatever crap reason.

Who cares what one person, or for that matter, a few people, think about us being here? We haven't done anything wrong and don't need to defend ourselves for any reason.

And as for picking apart the little things we like about the UK, that's a great way to show how much we all like to b1tch and moan about living here, huh?  ::) Lame. It just goes to show you that we appreciate this country far more than you yourself, in my opinion.

Oh god. I recently watched an entire hour of his stand-up. Someone had posted it on youtube.  I was at DH's work keeping him company and freaking him out with my inability to contain my snort/laugh. He is awesome.

I think one way for those of us who take some of what was said personally is to inject a bit of humour, it is better than getting defensive, and I find myself struggling with exactly what the OP is talking about it anyway.
